New Speed Goat Rifle!!!!
« on: August 14, 2009, 03:33:17 PM »
Well my Smith called yesterday and said my .25-06 was ready to hunt.  All the work isn't done yet but she is good to go out for pronghorn this season before the final finishing touches are put on the rifle.  I'll give him back the rifle to finish the work in December after the late doe season is over and I got about 6 weeks to get a load built before I head out looking for a buck!

My rifle started life as a Zastava action with double set triggers.  I picked up a factory second Monte Carlo Rollover stock from Richards Microfit.  Barrel is 26" Lilja #5 contour Stainless Steel.  Stock still needs a lot of work, and the teflon finish needs to be put on, but I think this rifle will hunt.  I'm going to run a 2.5-8X36 Leupold VXIII this hunting season, but by next I hope to have a 2.5-16X42 Bushnell Elite 6500 sitting on top of this rifle.

Just picked it up today and snapped a few pics.  Looks like I need to do some more barrel inletting in the channel.  But hey it was a factory second stock and is still a work in progress!

:) ;) 1, Very sharp rifle, I like the stock, and the barrel is top quality. ;) It will shoot as good as it looks. It will also make a wonderful coyote rifle. That caliber is one of my favorites. :D I especially am interested inthe  double set triggers. If I ever go the custom route again, I would like to try those. One thing I haven't done with my center fire rifles. Let us know how this shoots. Where are you hunting antelope this season????? :D ;) :)

GMU 120 for buck Oct 3-9th for Colorado rifle season.  Then I got a second tag for GMU 120,121,124,125 for late season doe IIRC starts on 14 December.  The double set tirgger is nice if you use it, if you don't set the trigger then the pull on the first trigger is extremly long!

Hmmmm, I thought that stock looked familiar.  I have one quite similar - another Richards Microfit - on a sporterized Husquarvarna M38 I have.  Nice rifle....

I'm not real impressed with this stock other than the figure in the wood.  The Carlo Walnut has been a PITA to work with since it wants to chip away.  Especially when you put a rasp or chisle to the wood.  I want to checker it eventually but don't know if I'll be able to do it the way the wood crumbles.

Pretty wood but I understand what your saying about the brittleness of it. I have a similar one now to checker and I think if I keep it to about 18 lpi or 20 at the most it'll be ok.  Good luck,

Well this defiantly isn’t how I wanted my first custom build to go.  I was taking apart my rifle tonight to relieve the barrel channel to so that I wouldn’t have the stock interfering with the barrel.  Well I accidently dropped the stock from about 3’ to the floor and well the picture says it all!

Anyone got a spare commercial Mauser 98 stock laying around that they want to part with?

Not to add insult to injury .But I think you were spot on with the wood being too brittle. If you need some help with a stock .Hit me up and I may be able to help you out. I have a buddy who may have a few laying about. rednkrog@yahoo.com

Taylor - that is a cryin' shame and such breakage should not have happened with a decent stock - there must have been something wrong with that Richards stock to begin with.

As your site Moderator (note I capitalized) I would advise you to immediately go to the Links page on Graybeard Outdoors and see what our sponsors who sell stocks have to offer.  I would also check out Boyd's Stocks - inexpensive yet solid and reliable.

Get thee to our Links page now and find your replacement stock.  The Richards have beautiful grain but even a inexpensive Boyd's looks better'n factory.

And try to repair the Richards to see if it will still work later on -  bedding compound should work for that.  HTH.

Taylor, that's terrible, when buying a figured wood stock always check that magazine area for grain that runs up & down instead of lengthways.  Lots of pretty stocks get broken right there.
It can be epoxied back together using some steel pins on the inside to strengthen it.  I recently put one back together that was blown into 4 pieces, buttstock, forend and the 2 sides.
A friend shooting at a range spilled some 22/250 cartridges on the ground and while picking them up also picked up a 7.62x39 and fired it thru his 22/250.  It was a Parker-Hale M98.  I bought the remains and rebuilt it.  Looks great, shoots great now.

Nice!! Beautiful Stock.

Well geez Taylor, I guess I'll have to retract the statement about the beautiful stock. What a shame and what a huge PITA for you. I feel bad for you. I hope Richard's Microfit is giving you a full refund, or at least a new replacement on that stock. It would seem that it should have sustained a fall from only 3 feet.

H08 didn't use one of the sponsors of this site, because like this site others have many great people who help each other out.  I just spent all day yesterday bedding my barreled action into a new stock that was given to my by a poster on 24hr Campfire.  The stock was much nicer than I expected and it was almost perfect fit for my barrel contour.  Here is a pic of the stock I got:

Taylor, that's great, good looking stock and looks like a straighter grain that runs lengthwise so it'll be much stronger than the other one.

Yep I knew that, however I did inform Richard's Microfit anyway.  No response back to my pictures that I sent on the email.  Of course I didn't expect any, but it never hurts to try.

Well I've finally got my rifle up and running today!  Even got to shoot a few groups today and the one I've got showing will probably be the one I hunt pronghorn next weekend with.  I like the new stock, and it shoud be a much stronger one.  I need to clean it up but that will have to wait until after hunting season is over.  Managed to trade up to a VXII 4-12X40 AO this week as well really like that scope on this rifle.  Next time I post on it I hope to have at least one pronghorn in the pic as well!

taylorforce1 –

That new stock and the action/barrel /scope combo look great together!  Very nice!

My Interarms Mark X action, also by Zastava, is currently at Krieger Barrel getting the action trued, the lugs lapped, barreled and pillar and glass bedded into a Boyd pepper laminate stock.  Like yours, my action is blue and I went with a stainless barrel (although heavy sporter/fluted).  Don’t know what kind of scope I’ll put on it but it’s a 6.5mm-06AI and I intend it for long range work – maybe a 20x, maybe more.  Krieger says they will ship early this week, Monday or Tuesday, and I can’t wait to see how it turned out.  Too late for speed goats, however, as I’ll be hunting them in Wyoming next Saturday.

Well I finished up the rifle finaly!  Didn't keep the VXII on the rifle because as it was out getting a teflon finsih I used it on another rifle I've got set up to hunt with this fall.  So I've got a 4-16X40 AO Bushnell Elite 4200 on it now I just swaped out the Weaver bases and rings for a Leupold 1 piece base and rings today.  I did some work to that free stock and it came out much better than expected.  Here are some pictures for you to enjoy!
