No "AR shortage" here.
« on: February 14, 2009, 02:13:13 PM »

Dear Guys,

I was at the Dulles-Chantilly gunshow in Northern Virginia yesterday. There were lots of new and used ARs of every description.  No shortage there.

Everybody's running scared to get what they want before they are all gone, but all I see is another reason for the price to go up for now.  How much if any advance notice are we really going to have before you can't buy one over the counter?  I bought two AK's in the last month used and for a good price, not because I had to have them or didn't think I would have another chance. In my area there are plenty of used AR's floating around too.

$1,099 seemed to be a popular price for new A3 types. But, I didn't check the manufacturer.

Thats cheap compared to shops here in Texas. Have seen some 1500 to 2000.

Unless they go down I'll just wait and pick one up when the smoke clears.  ;)

You might be able to find a used AR for around $700 here.  The new ones are $1100 bare.

I watch the online auctions every once in a while and I was surprised to see the some of the AR prices are going down.  DPMS AR's in 308 are getting their prices hiked up the most out of all of the AR rifles.

Yes, I would imagine that you will see standard models fall quite a bit in price.  The "hysteria-buying" is over.  Now the dealers are sitting on inventory, priced $500 above normal, selling nothing, with the cold grip of the recession around their throats.

It's unfortunate, but I expect to see a lot of like new, never fired rifles for sale in the next year.  There's a lot of people that bought an overpriced rifle that are just going to keep it in the closet until $$ gets tight, then have to sell it at a loss.

I'm just hoping the ammo & components become reasonable again.  I can't hardly afford to reload my own ammo these days.  Even factory 30-30 is almost a $1 a round these days.

I'm beginning to see this happening now on a small scale. I checked out several pawnshops and gun stores Saturday and found 3 ar's at different places. I asked about each of them and the same answer was given for each ( just couldn't afford to keep it). All the rifles looked brand new and each had a price tag of no less than 1000 bucks. Some of the local gun stores have new rifles for 1200 dollar plus on the sticker.

Ammo is a big problem right now for everyone. Everything from 22lr and up is sold out. If a store gets ammo in today it will be gone before the end of the week.

After the remarks made by the new Atty General yesterday R/E the Obama Administration wanting to re-institute the Clinton assault weapon ban, I went out this morning and bought another .223 Bushmaster M4.  $1000.00 even with 2 mags, sling, cleaning kit, hard case.  They were $900.00 before the election.

I look at it like this - This makes an even dozen assault rifles in my safe.  If nothing comes of any future bans, I'll sell it and about break even.  If things don't go good, I'll sell it for two or three times what I spent.  I learned that with a couple of pre-ban H&K's back during the first ban.  Better then money in the stock market, but a sad way to make a profit....
