for mine i load a Hornady350gr rn with 45gr's of IMR 4198 from what i remember it was leaving the barrel a little over 2000 fps. I have never killed a deer with this load and if i where going too i would back it down around 40grn's. I have killed hogs with this load and it is devistating even on a 400lb hog complete pass through both shoulders. I also load a Marlin .450 the same way. Oh and it kicks like hell to!

what  is  the  origin  of  the  405   grain??
why  the  added  5 grains?

i  will  take the above  post  as  telling  me  400  is plenty

400  lbs  is  big  and  a  pass through

400 is plenty, even at an ambling 12-1300 FPS you will shoot through just about anything you will meet in the lower 48, and if you want to pump it up, you can quite a bit and get into big dog power and recoil.  500 or heavier are best for long range shooting with black powder where you need the sectional density to keep the bullet from being impacted too much by wind...

I'm using 53 grs. of IMR 4198 and a 300 gr. Hornady in my gun,and its going through the chrono at 2363 fps.avg. It may be a real kicker in a Handi, but its pure fun in my CVA.  I'm getting 1" groups and less at 100 yds.and it should be really hard on hogs and deer.  Digger

I don't know if it will vaporize them, but I'll bet that they know they've been hit.

In Louisiana now we rarely see rabbits, except in subdivisions.  We seem to have an overabudance of fat coyotes thought.  I wish you would vaporize them.  I miss not having rabbits anymore.

That is great velocity, and it probably shoots pretty flat, but it is on the outside of the working range for the 300 grain Hornady, and a couple of friends really made a mess out of a couple of whitetails with loads like that. If you like that velocity, perhaps a cast 300 would be better? Not critisizing in any way, just passing on the field experience of friends.

If you are concerned about the 300 grain Hollow points above about 2200 fps then you might want to go with the Hornady 350 Round Noses, give up a little velocity, gain some ballistics.  You can move hornady 350s fast enough to expand, the speer 350s might not, they are really a 458 bullet, they even come with instructions that say so.  I like cast bullets, but I like the 350 rns alot too.

My shots are usually 60 to 150 yds. and the 300 gr. should be well below the 2200 fps.at that distance. My supplier is completly out of .458 bullets and these 300's are the only one's I have left. I did back off on the load on 5 rds. to 50 grs. of IMR 4198 to use if the 53 gr. one's don't perform right.  Digger

The Rem. 405 gr. JFN and 32.0 grs. of IMR 4198 makes a mild to shoot and  very accurate plinking load that nearly duplicates original trapdoor ballistics . This same recipe also makes a fine deer hunting load, giving great penetration, 1-2 " inside cavity holes,  exit holes , easy to read blood trails, and has proven to be a quick whitetail stopper .

Cast 50-50 of lead and wheel weight from Lyman 400 gn mold plus 32 gn of ADI AR2208 gives me 1300fps on my BC.

Groups about 1.5" at 100 meters.
Never shot further than that.

Great load for goats and pigs in NSW.

Almost vaporizes a rabbit if you got it head on through the skull into the backbone.  (still got the skin folded inside out tho)   ;D

This load is approved by my missus  ;D  and she is a small girl.
