sticky extraction model 63

i have a pinned-barrel 63 that  has god-awful long rifle extraction issues.I know this model is rather famous for this trait, what is the home-brew cure for this?a brief hand polish of the charge holes with flitz or sum-such?

Try different brands of ammunition. My 17 didn’t like several brands, especially standard velocity stuff. I found that Federal Lightning shot super and extracted very easily. I have been told that it has a lot to do with the type of bullet lube used by the manufacturer.

will try that, Joe. off to walmart to find something else. you made me remember, I believe what I was shooting today was a box of 550 value pack federals that were failing to extract in my mkII last weekend. I thought it was the extractor, so I ordered a new one for it. now I think it could have beenthe ammo all along. if it is, it's the first trouble i've ever had out of federal .22's,and i've shot a LOT  of those value packs.thanks.

I have a 17 purchased new, I have tried several brands of ammo, but she refuses to exject any of it without playing with the exjector rod for a while.  I just threw her back in the safe and forgot about it until I read this post.  I may be tempted to ship her back to S&W and let them take a look.  This it the only Smith I ever had a problem with....... ::) ::)

egads! I just came home with a box of winchester super x, and they stick out about halfway, and have to be pressed into the charge holes! i can only imagine what kinda freeze-up these are going to cause tomorrow! :-\ this is not the first smith i've had problems with...a nib 60-4 I ordered shot way to the left...the reason? THE BARREL WAS BENT TO THE LEFT,like hercules had took it in hand and bent it! I swore then i'd never buy another,but i gave 'em one more chance....

well, the winchester ammo, tho it needed a push to fully seat in the charge holes,fired and ejected easily. but the federals hung up in the chambers like they were glued.even firing only one in the cylinder,it hung up the same! i'm leaning towards a bad batch of federal bulk pack. looking thru the chambers with sunlight glancing thru, I can see some little "ripples" in the sides of a few chambers.i'll polish them lightly with flitz. and mark this batch of federals as "bad"...

Glad to hear that you found a brand that works well. When I was trying different brands I seem to remember that the standard velocity ammunition stuck worse than high velocity ammunition, and like you noted, sometimes the ammunition you hve to push into the chambers is the easiest to exctract after firing.
