I couldn't stand it any more
« on: December 12, 2008, 03:07:37 AM »
Well that stupid hot headed rush of blood to the head thing happened this morning. I finally ordered a Weatherby Vanguard in 257 WM. I hve been looking at the rifle and caliber for a little while and could no longer resist the temptation. On paper looks like a great performer but..... I have never shot one, nor know anyone who has. I will reload for this caliber, for sure, anybody got any good loads for this?
Another question, scope mounts? I will order another Dednutz mount for this, I believe it is the same as the Howa 1500 long action, is that correct?

Thanks in advance

I'm very pleased with the accuracy of mine. I have the wood stock gun and it's easily shooting 1/2" 5 shot groups with my handload of Re-22, Nosler 115 BT, Wby brass, and Fed mag primers. I've only just loaded it to "standard" over all length also. Some folks are using 7mm Rem mag brass and forming it to 257 Wby, instead of buying the good Norma made Wby brand brass (due to the cost of the Wby brass). If you go this route, just be aware that the powder capacity of the Rem brass is different (less I believe), and plan accordingly during your load development.

The barrel heats up pretty fast while shooting, so watch your barrel temp. Recoil is about like a 270 win. Very easy to shoot from a bench with just a T-shirt on. I replaced the trigger on mine with a Timney almost straight away, what a difference a trigger makes. Yes I believe the Howa mount is exactly the same, I'm using the standard Leupold mount on mine and it's not a problem. The only negative thing I would say is I wish the gun was a little lighter in weight, 8 lbs is a bit heavy for a "standard sporter".

Overall, I would certainly do it again.

One of the best all around calibers out there. I use the Nosler 115 and the Hornady 120 Interlock both will do sub MOA using Re22. Don't change out the trigger till you tried adjusting the stock one. Many people have good results. ;)

Great choice Ahab, You will really like the 257 Roy. I have a Vangaurd that came with a pretty nice trigger although i hear that that is the exception to the rule. The 257Roy has been my go to rifle the past couple of years but has not hunted much this year, I have too many rifles that need to make the rotation. I Am taking My daughter on 5 day hunt starting next Friday and The Roy will be coming along. She will be shooting a 257 Bob and I will be "backing her up" with the Roy.
