Rail guns.
« on: September 15, 2005, 11:11:05 AM »
Anybody ever dealt with these?  I saw a demonstration of one while I was in the Army, and I have taken on the challenge of creating one.  The tolerances for this thing are driving me nuts...and so is the issue of how I am going to generate enough elctricity to power the pulse if an when I do complete it.  I haven't even gotten the rails together...and I probably won't, but I can say that I have attempted to build a rail gun.  What I have now are two rails...I plan on seeing if there is an issue with the ATF before I go further.

If you have never heard of a Rail Gun here is an exerpt:

"Yahoo News is reporting that scientists at Sandia National Labs have created a magnetic pulse gun (rail gun) that can accelerate small aluminum plates at 34 kilometers per second, faster than the Earth travels through space. The accelerated plates strike a target after traveling only five millimeters, or less than a quarter-inch. The impact generates a shock wave -- in some cases, reaching 15 million times atmospheric pressure -- that passes through the target material turning matter into various states almost instantly (solids into liquids, liquids into gas, and even gas into plasma)."

The demostration I saw was basically superconducting magnets pushing a ferous object at incredible speeds, but not this fast.  I thin kthat is the approach I am going to go with.

I don't know if it will even get finished, but yeah, basically.  lol

I'll bet that the idjots at the BATF have never even heard of rail guns, let alone formed regulations against them. Why even bring it to their attention? You will probably have to build your own nuclear reactor to supply the power anyway.  :) And where do you plan on getting those superconducting magnets?

Something like that

If that dosen't work, I will find some laying around somewhere.

I have read that I can get more velocity by running the projectile through a helium environment (which also super cools my rails/magnets and keeps the projectile from welding itself to the rails)...They also used the theory (I guess it would no longer be a theory if it was proven true...) on the Air Force research rocket sled in New Mexico in which they broke the world speed record.  Basically you blow up a plastic cylinder with helium and it vaporizes the tube when shot.
