Ridiing and hunting.
« on: November 24, 2008, 02:24:41 PM »
I live in NW Wisconsin and the riding season is relatively short. I have often fantasized about taking my bike out for a day of small game hunting. Maybe a scabbard mounted on the front forks for the shotgun and a handgun in the saddle bags. Anyone ever do this?

I have soft bags and a sissy bar so it helps hauling long guns. I put the case butt in the bag and bungee the barrel to the sissy bar and they haul fine.I've found that a scabard hooked to the front forks realy needs to be lose so I don't do it anymore, they do work ok with a springer if you think about whats moveing when you attach it. I haul my take down bows the same as rifles or shotguns.

I once put my take-down recurve bow in a hard arrow case and rode my Wide Glide for 3.5 hours to my bro-inlaws and we shot a round of 3-D's. After the shoot I bungied the case back on and rode back home. It was a great day, I'll definitely have to do it again!

Soft take down cases - guns apart (Mod 97s, 12s, old doubles) - can lay them in the bags on the Road King with just the tips sticking out to the front, and latch the rear buckle only. Never had any problems.

I have often thought on this subject and haven't come up with any good ideas.   :-[  Small game wouldn't be bad if you use a take downable firearm or pistol.  But most all of my hunting is deer hunting.  You take most rifles down and you should recheck your zero.  And I never could figure out how a deer would do riding Bi#@*.   ???

So, 3 or 4 years ago I rode the 240 miles to where I hunt carrying nothing.  I had left it all at my friend's house the week before.  And we have a cooler for the deer.  They can stay there until I come back in a cage the next week.  See boys, just a little prior planning!   ;D

My varmit fun gun is a 22 hornet H&R. I had the barrel cut to 16 1/4" and put an AR type adjustable stock on it and scope in quick release rings. It fits complettly in my saddel bags and so far has always gone back together a shooter.

A NEF Handi Rifle or a Savage 24 will fit in most backpacks when disassembled.  I took a Savage 24 home from the gunshow not too long ago in my daypack while riding my Harley.

I understand they are popular in the Cowboy Action Shooting set.  I always liked the original and thought of getting one of the copies... but the chinese thing always bothered me.   :-\  A friend likes his.  Says it's reliable with a little work.

What length shells will that thing shoot? The originals fired a 2 1/2" shell but I know the chinese is a different chamber size 2 3/4" or more I beleive. I read a hunting mag story where the author killed a turkey with his original (restored completely) at 15 yards and he had to load his own shells for it because of the short shell case. Anyone else read that article. Been approx 3-4 years ago not sure which mag it was but it was a more popular one.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

Would be a fun gun if it held up well with modern shells. There were a lot of weak spots in design but if being built with modern steel who knows.I just worry about all the lead China keeps putting in all its pruduces, sure don't need lead blended into their steel for guns.

I have often fantasized about taking my bike out for a day of small game hunting.

I started thinking about this again in the light of small game.  I had thought about slinging an AK or FAL across my back during deer season, but that would probably be a little to much even here in comparatively gun friendly Jawja!   :-\

However, a taken down Handi-rifle in .410 ought to come pretty close to fitting in my saddlebags!   ;D  And I'd still have room for iced down squirrel, rabbit and quail!  (and beer but that goes without saying)   8)

One thing that everyone should check is you state's concealed weapon laws.  It may be that a pistol or maybe even a rifle, in your saddlebags could constitute carrying a concealed weapon!

Hopefully it would be the same a carring a rifle in the trunk or behind the seat of your pick-up but bikers always have that little extra to worry about.

Ya know the bigger bike all have the grunt to pull a trailer thease days, I wonder how well one would work for hauling back some deer chops?  As for carry of the firearm I live in SE Kentucky people look at ya funny around here if ya aint packin.  Packin in your bags is legal here also but a CCW is pretty easy to get too.

...pull a trailer... I wonder how well one would work for hauling back some deer chops?

Sometime after I wrote my post the same thing crossed my mind!  I know people who pull home made trailers and they can carry a BUNCH of stuff!  I ain't putting no trailer hitch on my scoot though!  That leads to Geezer glides, you and the OL wearing matching pin striped leathers and full face helmets!   ;D

Ya know I don't think to many would call you a Geezer iffn ya was pulling a flaybed with a nice chunk of venison laying on it. I betcha Burt Munro woulda done it, but at 180MPH. ;D  I may have to see if I can rig a sidecar on my ridgid when I get her built. 8)
