trouble with my SRH......
« on: November 16, 2008, 12:29:09 PM »
I did a search for this , came up empty....I recently sent my SRH to Ruger in Connecticut for repairs.  After firing several rounds , the cylinder would "jam" up ,not rotate either by single action or double action.  Nothing found in the action, the bullets were not jumping crimp.......its chambered in 454 , it would do this in both 45 and 454.  Didn't seem to matter about the pressure of the load.  I heard one time that someone was having problems with the cylinder of a SRH 454 actually coming partially unlatched under HEAVY recoil , thus putting the cylinder out of time if only slightly , but enough to cause it to jam up.  Anybody else ever have this problem with their SRH ??  I sent my back several weeks ago , I'm anxious to hear what the problem was.   Thanks ,,  irold

Sounds like your bolt wasn't falling after the shot.

Pardon my ignorance , but what do you mean ?  The cylinder would open easy enough , just open and close it and your ready to shoot again...maybe one , maybe 2 or 3 shots , then it would jam up again.  Hopefully I'll be hearing from it soon ......Thanks , irold

When you open your cylinder, look on the flat part of the frame just above the trigger. There's a hole cut out and a piece of steel protruding though the hole, that is supposed to fit in the little notches cut into your cylinder. That is the bolt, and if it doesn't fall when you go to cock your revolver, the cylinder will not turn...

Mike, the part that Tom is refering to is called the "Pawl", not the "Bolt". Go to Ruger's web site and open the "Product Service" window. There you'll find an exploded diagram of the Super Redhawk under "Double Action Revolvers". This will tell you the part names and where they're placed in the gun frame. It won't solve your problem since Ruger is obviously doing that but you'll get a much better idea of what your gun looks like inside.

It isn't the pawl, as that is what indexes on the ejector (kh01800). if anything, it's part kh04504,which the book calls a cylinder latch.  I've been wrong in terminology before... Let us know what the invoice says when you get your revolver back.

Ok , well whatever it is , I hope they fix it.  I called Ruger several days ago , and btw , I sent it to New Hampshire , not Connecticut as I had previously posted, ask them for an update as the Pa deer season gets underway soon, was hoping to get it back.  She was very nice and understanding...said she'd post a question to the smith ( her records indicated it was being worked on ), guess the smith never got his post of something....haven't heard from them yet....probably got their hands full with the SR-9s.   Not sure if recalled SR-9 are going to New Hampsire or not.

I have had no problems with my SRH  but about 15 years ago I had the exact problem with my SBH in 44 mag.   After a heavy load the cylinder would lock up and it would be impossible to cock the hammer for the next shot.

I sent it back to Ruger and they fixed it in a timely manner at no charge.

Tom is correct - the part that locks the cylinder in place and keeps it from turning while firing occurs is called the cylinder latch, and the part that rotates the cylinder into the next firing position, by pushing on one of the ejector star's ratchet teeth, is called the pawl.

The trigger link plunger could also be bound, which would in turn bind the cylinder latch and/or the pawl - as these parts operate one another.

I have not had any problems with any of the Super Redhawks that I have owned, however, I had a Blackhawk that needed repair and sent it back to Ruger. The gun was returned in about 4 weeks and the trigger was much smoother than before.

Evening Gentlemen :

Just an update on the SRH I sent to Ruger.  I got it back couple days ago , Ruger had replaced the cylinder , repaired crane , repaired the latch , repaired internal parts.....that's the way the packing list described the repairs.  They really didn't say WHAT the problem was.  I can tell you it has a really nice trigger pull....and smooooooooth.  Guess that was worth the wait in itself.  Weather is ugly now here in western Pa...have to wait for decent skies to try it out.  Thanks for all your wisdom and help.  irold

Good to hear that.. I may have to "invent" a problem with mine to get the trigger smoothed out!
