35 Whelen does it's part!
« on: December 01, 2008, 06:53:23 AM »
I got in the blind at 6:10 am--foggy.
7:00 fog starts to lift, no deer, just cows.
7:25 two does run up over the hill from the creek bottom and stop at about 170 to 180 yds.
7:35 I have a good rest and the cross hairs are on the back of the head which is at a slight quarter away from me.
Should I, or wait for a better shot?   :-\
It will either be good eating or keep hunting!
Squeeze the trigger and now I got work ahead of me!!   :)
Entered just behind the right ear low (right where I was aiming) and out the front on the off side half way down the nose.
35 cal. hole going in and about the size of a quarter coming out.
The Rem 200gr didn't do near as much damage as I thought it would.
Weighed about 80#.
Chalk one up for the WHELEN!!   ;)

Way to go dude!  I won't be surprised when the posts start coming in about "overkill".  There is no such thing.  I plinked my little buck Saturday with the .45-70 Handi.  Spined him at 220 yards and didn't ruin an ounce of meat.  It was just in front of the backstrap.  Overkill?........No he was just bang flop dead....and that's exactly what we want.  It was an offhand shot and I went a little too high.  3 or 4 inches higher and he'd still be running the woods.  He went about 125 - 130 dressed.  I'm tucking him in the freezer now and keeping out a backstrap for supper.
Keep both eyes open and make the first shot good.

Great shooting!!!

I killed a young buck some years ago with a similar shot, but
mine was only 40 yards.  Wasted ZERO meat!

Way to go!!!

That's what I call a great shot.  No damage to the eating parts makes it a good shot.  The range makes it a great shot.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Thanks guys!

I used to shoot everything behind the shoulder and still will when the conditions call for it.
With my old 270 or the newer 270wsm there really wasn't much challenge so I started using different calibers.
First it was a 307 in a Win Model 94 Big Bore, fun but still no big deal.
Then it was a 45-70 in a Win 1886 on open sights.
That took some getting use to.
Those old sights sure cover up a lot of deer at a distance.
Retired it because it was worth to much to take the chance on damageing it.
Then a 45-70 in a BC and it has served me well over the years.
Then a Handi in 45-70.
This also has proved to be a fun gun.
This year it was going to be the 7x57 Handi until the youngest claimed it.
So now it's the 35W, and to put a little more skill in the game I started taking head shots when possible.
Just got tired of having to clean up and/or waste so much meat!
The good thing is that it is either a good shot or a miss, which really makes you concentrate on your shooting skills.
I was very supprised that the 200gr 35 didn't drop any at that distance.
Was also pleasantly supprised at the small amount of damage done.
I was expecting a real mess when I got over to her.
The next one might be a different story, don't know.
We'll see,  HOPEFULLY!!
Kind of wanting to take one with my custom Blackhawk I'm having built, if GALLAGER gets it back to me in time to work up a load.
With my two growing boys and my heart problems I live off of deer meat and have for years so there is always room in the freezer for one more.
The worst thing is trying to decide what cal. to use next year!   LOL:  :D
