Got a deer with my 45-70 KP1
« on: November 15, 2008, 06:25:30 AM »
I got an 8 point buck with my 4570 KP1 yesterday.  I made the shot from a tree stand about 90 yards across a pasture.  The ammo I was using was the Hornady Leverevolution ammo.  I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the performace of the rifle and the ammo.  The rifle put the bullet right where I was aiming.  The bullet performance was perfect.  I was a little surprised though.  Plastic tipped bullets often act like hollow points but this bullet penetrated spectacularly.  The deer was walking directly at me but I did not want to make a frontal shot.  Fortunately it turned to its left and offered me a quartering shot to its right side.  The bullet hit the right shoulder, penetrated to the chest, passed through both lungs and the heart and exited the left rear rib cage.  At the shot the deer took off like a bolt of lighting (on three legs no less) but could only run in a half circle and collapsed after running 50 feet.  It died almost immediately.

Let me tell you, this buck had been busy.  It had the most worn down antlers I have ever seen.  The front points were worn to nubs and were the base points were heavily worn.  Also its antlers were covered with cedar shavings.  He was quite a site.

How does that 308 shoot?  The 308 and the 44 magnum are currently the tops of my list for future add on barrels.

I started out shooting remington core loc. The first box shot pretty good. I got another box. It didnt shoot second box as well. Also had one misfire. I bought a box of fusion 165 gr. Shot this evening, It done pretty good, took a couple shots to get zero. Then shot 3 shot groups. It grouping a little over a inch at 100 yds. Didnt really have a good rest, was shooting from hood of truck. I think it will be a accurate rifle with the fusion ammo. On two of three groups two holes touching third shot about inch off. Sort of expensive at 27 dollars a box. Maybe time to look at reloading.

I wont preach, especially since I was using factory ammo this season, but I have reloaded for about 15 years.  I dont do as much shooting as I would like, but I love to reload what I shoot.  Cost savings are certainly a good reason to start, but other reasons are out there.  First, you can make ammo that does not exist commercially.  This is true even for the 308 (which has tons of factory loads available). Second, I find great pleasure in making ammunition, and then shooting my creations.  I am one who actually enjoys the process of reloading.

It sounds like the 308 has promise.  My KP1 has a very strong primer strike, I find it hard to believe that mine would misfire unless the ammo was just plain bad.  Anyhow, thanks for the report.  Good luck with you hunt.

I dont think the misfire was guns fault. The primer on the misfire was dented as deep as the rest of the primers that had fired. But it did go off the second time. Also one of the cases had a dent in it. I think it was a bad box of shells. The dented one went off fine. All of them grouped well. I have shot remington shells for many years, but this made me a little unsure.  I think I will stick with the fusion for now.

I just had a bad experience with Remington Ammo. Two boxes of 165gr. core-lock  30-06 I had (8) misfires. My new KP 1 had some problems of its own. I returned it to the factory. They fixed the problems and I tried the new fusion ammo. I have had no misfires and I am shooting tighter groups. Also tried W-W super X no problems with that ammo either. Remington has great guns I own two. They need to improve their ammo.

TDH...did you have misfire problems in your KP1 with ammo other than Remington?
