New Model Super Blackhawk
« on: January 04, 2009, 10:47:55 AM »
I have a New Model  Super Blackhawk .44 Mag. That I got second hand. The guy I got it from gave me an extra cylinder ,that he said came with the gun new. He said he did not remember what it was chambered for but was suppose to let you shoot some ammo that is cheaper that the .44 mags.
I checked all the measurements on this cylinder and looked for a caliber that matched in my Lyman reloading Handbook. What I came up with is the .45 Auto Rim . But There is no way  that I can see to fire that cartridge  in my Ruger. That bullet is .452 and  the bullet for the .44 is .429.
Dose anyone have an idea what this cylinder is actually for? It fits in my gun and the timing is right. It locks up perfectly in line with the barrel.

Perhaps .44-40?

Yes, it could very well be a 44-40. There isn't too many of them 44 convertibles so before you do anything with it, call Ruger and with the serial number, they will tell you what the cylinder is, if it came with the gun.

I just happend to have a part of a box of 44/40s that have been laying around here for years. I dug them out and they chambered right up. So I guess that mystery is solved.

You have a very collectable gun there, if it letters as a convertible.

I went to the Ruger web site and found this warning.

Do not accept delivery of a New Model Blackhawk
Convertible (a model with two cylinders) unless
the numbers on the front face of both cylinders
match the last three digits of the serial number on
the frame. Use of the wrong cylinder can cause
improper alignment or timing and may result in
personal injury.
A Blackhawk revolver (including the Super
Blackhawk & Bisley) manufactured with a single
cylinder does not have the last three digits of the
serial number marked on the cylinder.
CYLINDERS
MUST MATCH

The cylinders with my gun have no numbers. So I  don't think I will try to shoot the extra cylinder.
