Commie Handi in Alabama
« on: November 30, 2008, 04:03:04 AM »
We just got back from a week in Alabama, hunting on the club.  My 13 yr old got his first deer, with a 7.62X39.  About 115 yds, bang-flop.  Nice spike, weighed 110 lbs.  The kid is almost as proud of himself as I am proud of him.  The deer came in to the food plot, he didn't rush his shot.  He waited til it turned broad side and then put the 123 gr. Hornady where it needed to go. Who says you have to have a Magna-Boomer to kill a deer?

Errybody what is anybody knows that over the years of being hunted that all big game animals have evolved and now have a layer of armor plate just below the skin. Bullets of less than .30 caliber bounce off regardless of velocity or construction  :o and only super duper magnum party poopers can penetrate and kill these new fangled armor plated deer. Yew guys using less are only kidding yourselves that you can kill a deer.  ::)

Me I've never shot one with more gun that a .30-06 and most with far less. I don't hunt those modern genetically improved deer but then I happen to know the only remaining area for such a population of those old fashioned deer that don't require super magnums so you're just out of luck without such a rifle.  ;D

Sorry Bill, I guess you bought land up by me in Montana, cause I just got back with 4 more deer (7 total) that took 280's or, the old gal, 35 Rem.  Got rid of all my magnums except the 257 that I wanted for years and finally got.  Still haven't used it on an animal, no real need I guess, just sneek closer.  There are alot of places around here you can see several miles, so at some point in time I'm sure I'll use it on something.  But I agree 100%, don't need magnums to kill deer or elk or even moose.  l've seen to many put down with out em.  Also seen alot of guys that got that "new magnum" just for this hunt that couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it, too scared of the kick.  Proved it to one guy, asked to see his new toy, racked the bolt but put the round back in the magazine and handed it back to him to make sure the scope was still on.  Pushed the gun so hard it was aiming about 10 ft in front of us when it didn't go bang.  Thats enough from me, just hope everyone had a good hunt, ours ends today.  I filled all my tags for deer and the 14 yr old boy got a nice buck so a very good year here.  DP
