Some words to live by.

"If you bring these [Confederate] leaders to trial it will condemn the North, for by the Constitution secession is not rebellion. Lincoln wanted Davis to escape, and he was right. His capture was a mistake. His trial will be a greater one."
Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase, July 1867 (Foote, The Civil War, Vol. 3, p. 765)

"It is stated in books and papers that Southern children read and study that all the blood shedding and destruction of property of that conflict was because the South rebelled without cause against the best government the world ever saw; that although Southern soldiers were heroes in the field, skillfully massed and led, they and their leaders were rebels and traitors who fought to overthrow the Union, and to preserve human slavery, and that their defeat was necessary for free government and the welfare of the human family. As a Confederate soldier and as a citizen of Virginia, I deny the charge, and denounce it as a calumny. We were not rebels; we did not fight to perpetuate human slavery, but for our rights and privileges under a government established over us by our fathers and in defense of our homes."
Colonel Richard Henry Lee, C.S.A.

"You have no right to ask, or expect that she will at once profess unbounded love to that Union from which for four years she tried to escape at the cost of her best blood and all her treasure. Nor can you believe her to be so unutterably hypocritical, so base, as to declare that the flag of the Union has already surpassed in her heart the place which has so long been sacred to the 'Southern Cross.' "
General Wade Hampton

"Captain, my religious belief teaches me to feel as safe in battle as in bed. God has fixed the time for my death. I do not concern myself about that, but to be always ready, no matter when it may overtake me. That is the way all men should live, and then all would be equally brave."
Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson

As for the South, it is enough to say that perhaps eighty per cent. of her armies were neither slave-holders, nor had the remotest interest in the institution. No other proof, however, is needed than the undeniable fact that at any period of the war from its beginning to near its close the South could have saved slavery by simply laying down its arms and returning to the Union."
Major General John B. Gordon, from his book, Causes of the Civil War.

"The flags of the Confederate States of America were very important and a matter of great pride to those citizens living in the Confederacy. They are also a matter of great pride for their descendants as part of their heritage and history."
Winston Churchill

"I was raised by one of the greatest men in the world. There was never one born of a woman greater than Gen. Robert E. Lee, according to my judgment. All of his servants were set free ten years before the war, but all remained on the plantation until after the surrender."
William Mack Lee (Robert E. Lee's Black servant)

Robert E. Lee's statement to his students is the one over-riding rule at Confederate Colonel. "We have only one rule here - to act like a gentleman at all times." We will close with Robert E. Lee's Definition of a Gentleman:
"The forbearing use of power does not only form a touchstone, but the manner in which an individual enjoys certain advantages over others is a test of a true gentleman. The power which the strong have over the weak, the employer over the employed, the educated over the unlettered, the experienced over the confiding, even the clever over the silly -- the forbearing or inoffensive use of all this power or authority, or a total abstinence from it when the case admits it, will show the gentleman in a plain light. The gentleman does not needlessly and unnecessarily remind an offender of a wrong he may have committed against him. He cannot only forgive, he can forget; and he strives for that nobleness of self and mildness of character which impart sufficient strength to let the past be but the past. A true man of honor feels humbled himself when he cannot help humbling others.

A score of millions hear the cry
And herald it abroad,
To arms they fly to do or die
For Liberty and God. --E.P. Dyer – A Confederate
solider

A prayer by an American Confederate soldier

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve,
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do great things,
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.
I asked for riches, that I might be happy,
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life,
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for-but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

An African poem:

Life has meaning only in a struggle.
Victory and defeat are in the hands of the Gods.
So let us celebrate the struggle.

I, and most, agree with Lincoln.
I, and most, agree that they committed no crime in secession.
We all agree that they lost the war that would finally accomplish this secession.
The real question you argue is was the Union legal in defending what they considered Soverigh Union/American soil.
That, also was decided by the war and established the unwritten law that the winner of a war writes the law.

That, also was decided by the war and established the unwritten law that the winner of a war writes the law.

In that example the union would have written the law and enacted it retroactively.  This lends proof that they were illegal in their invasion of the south.

The actions of man and human edict never make wrong principle right.

lc I assume by your statements that you are answering WL. Since I no longer read or answer him I wonder if you might be so kind as to tell me what in the world Union legality has anything to do with my thoughts on words to live by? Is he saying that these people didn't say these things or is he just wanting to argue for the sake of doing it?

I don't understand him at all nor do I want to at this point in time.

They did fight a noble fight. They were granted the right to keep slavery if they returned too the Union.
They chose too continue the war.
Wheather right or wrong, illegal or legally, the Union won.
I think the union had as much right as did the Confederacy. If the Confederacy had won, would we be having this conversation?
It happened and it is what it is.
Now, as in the Texas thread, are you advocating we do it all again? you are bound too repeat history if you don't remember it.
Just tell him I agreed with not trying Davis for treason.
Blessings

Again William you are off on another tangent having zip to do with the thread you are posting to. But by your own admission here in that post "They were granted the right to keep slavery if they returned too the Union. They chose too continue the war." You confess that it was NOT about slavery even tho you continue to try to harp that it was. Had it been they'd have stopped fighting and kept the slaves.

Can we stay on topic to the various threads?

Well, I'll offer up an apology for zipping into oblivion on my last post.

Stonewall Jackson was a man.  The following quote is my favorite of those posted.  The statement by Lee would be second.
I am assuming that Jackson was Presbyterian as this statement speaks strongly of God's sovereignty in all the actions of mankind.  I believe that we see in this statement a man who was truly at peace with God.  Ga wb,  these are indeed words to live by.

I'll again say that there is no better test of a man's thoughts that that which he says and does.  The following quote firstly gives the personal convictions of the man concerning his stance during the war.  His words were backed up by his actions.

We were not rebels; we did not fight to perpetuate human slavery, but for our rights and privileges under a government established over us by our fathers and in defense of our homes."
Colonel Richard Henry Lee, C.S.A.

Edited to add:  Thomas Jefferson:
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Thanks lc and Greybeard.

lc I'm struck by the truthfullness of your Thomas Jefferson quote; there ie truly no better way to define liberty!!

Ga wb,

I'll give credit to Gary G.  I found that Jefferson quote in a post that he made.

Isn't it powerful!

I heard a fella call Rush a day or two ago.  He was from Texas and the host of the show was Mark ______________ from Texas.   They were discussing the Pro Hockey player that was suspended for speaking foul of his ex-girlfriend.  This fella that called in yelled that the Pro-Hockey player had the right to say whatever he wanted because of free speech.  The young fella got hammered because he didn't have a leg to stand on.

I remember being taught, in my early elementary years here in KY, this would have been the early 70's, that my rights ended where someone else rights began.

Jefferson's words there are definitely a message that needs to be heralded far and wide in this world.  Maybe we can start with mainstream media!!

I have said to my boys many times, and more to myself. "You and I, under freedom of speech GRANTED BY GOD, have the right to say what ever we want. The question is; Is it right to say it?"

Well said Dee!!

A few more thoughts to ponder:

"Let danger never turn you aside from the pursuit of honor or the service to your country ... Know that death is inevitable and the fame of virtue is immortal"
Robert E. Lee

"The Union government liberates the enemy's slaves as it would the enemy's cattle, simply to weaken them in the conflict. The principle is not that a human being cannot justly own another, but that he cannot own him unless he is loyal to the United States."London Spectator in reference to the Emancipation Proclamation

"Sirs, you have no reason to be ashamed of your Confederate dead; see to it they have no reason to be ashamed of you."Robert Lewis Dabney, Chaplain for Stonewall Jackson

"Every man should endeavor to understand the meaning of subjugation before it is too late... It means the history of this heroic struggle will be written by the enemy; that our youth will be trained by Northern schoolteachers; will learn from Northern school books their version of the war; will be impressed by the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors, and our maimed veterans as fit objects for derision... It is said slavery is all we are fighting for, and if we give it up we give up all. Even if this were true, which we deny, slavery is not all our enemies are fighting for. It is merely the pretense to establish sectional superiority and a more centralized form of government, and to deprive us of our rights and liberties."Maj. General Patrick R. Cleburne, CSA, January 1864

"We feel that our cause is just and holy; we protest solemnly in the face of mankind that we desire peace at any sacrifice save that of honour and independence; we ask no conquest, no aggrandizement, no concession of any kind from the States with which we were lately confederated; all we ask is to be let alone; that those who never held power over us shall not now attempt our subjugation by arms."
President Jefferson Davis, C.S.A. - 29 April 1861

"The principle for which we contend is bound to reassert it's self, though it may be at another time and in another form."President Jefferson Davis, C.S.A.

"Men do not differ about what
Things they will call evils;
They differ enormously about what evils
They will call excusable." - G.K. Chesterton

AWESOME!

I love the quote from R L Dabney.  Since he was Jackson's chaplain it's almost certain that Jackson was Presbyterian.  This would explain his understanding of his day's being numbered and his life and times being determined by God's will.  From what I've read of Dabney's writings he is a man to be admired.

I'm assuming here that Jeff Davis meant that we would again do battle over the issue of slavery.............................. ;)

Lord have Mercy what a statement. If we could but transfer that thought to D.C. with proper context, and feeling that one should get when reading it even now.

Amen, it brings a tear to the eye, does it not? May God truly bless everyone of them.
