Extended hand-screwable chokes! Fabulous!
« on: September 18, 2008, 04:25:24 AM »
I wanted to add a bit of customization to my Winchester Select O/U trap gun so it works for both trap and skeet. Got some Browning exteded choke tubes: skeet/skeet for skeet and Mod/Full for trap. These chokes screw in finger tight and I really like them. I got a pouch to go with them and now I can switch from skeet to trap in just a couple of minutes.

It doesn't seem like a big deal, but it's really a nice feature. I keep the tubes in the car with my hat and ear muffs. Then all I need is the gun and some ammo and go shoot whatever game the muse impells me to do.

I don't much care for the look of the things, but it's a heck of a lot nicer than using a wrench.

Yup love them and that's all I use for chokes these days are the extended ones. I think all mine are actually made by Briley. They make the ones Browning sells as both Midas and Diana grade tubes. I prefer the look of the Midas with the gold ring but all work equally well. Since mostly all I do these days is shoot skeet I seldom change them out but back when I shot sporting clays I was constantly changing tubes.

I got the Diana models.

Of course there's a fly in the ointment now. Just for the heck of it I used 1 ounce #9s and the skeet choke last night to shoot trap. Worked fine at 16 yard trap. Breaks were as good as with #8 shot using a modified choke. Just for fun I'll keep shooting trap with the skeet chokes and #9s and see what happens. It's one of those things that's not supposed to work. Of course, a lot of things in shooting aren't supposed to work, but they do anyway.

Actually from the 16 yard line so long as you shoot fairly quickly after the bird comes out #9 is fine but then that is why #8-1/2 was invented. It gives more dense patterns than #8 with a bit more punch than #9 in case you wait just a bit too long for #9 to be effective. Still 9s will cleanly break clays to at least 40 yards. The skeet choke will likely give you a few birds you'd miss with a Modified choke tube and maybe even an occasional one you'd miss with an IC but the IC will give you more than the skeet if you aren't breaking them inside 35 yards.

Well, so much for that little project. I tried that #9 shot with the skeet choke at 16 yard trap again and my results were as before, a severe case of CHS (Can't Hit Shtargets). I switched back to the modified choke and began doing well again. Don't know if it was psychological, but I really don't think so. I expected the skeet choked gun to work better than it did. The targets that I did hit did not break very well. Big chunks. With the modified choke they crumbled very nicely. Three rounds shot, two with modified choke were 23 and 24. With skeet choke, probably no better than 15. I didn't count them, but I sure missed a lot.
