M/28 Finnish Mosin Nagant
« on: December 12, 2008, 07:17:06 PM »
Keeping the military surplus gun pics coming. Next is one of the rarer finds I have made in my short collecting career. Not only that but the gun shop I found this one in had obviously mis-identified it as just a standard Mosin Nagant because they only wanted 90 bucks for it. Ah, but it's actually a M/28 Finish Mosin Nagant rifle. A fairly rare gun. Only 32,000 were ever made before it was replaced by the 28/30 version. And only about 17,000 M/28s are known to have survived the 3 wars they served in. This one has a Tikka barrel and was assembled in the Sako plant. Better still it is marked with the letters SY which means it was issued to a Civil Guard unit rather than a standard army unit. That makes it rarer. But it gets better still. Most M/28s had the standard dog collar slots on both ends but this has a swivel sling on the butt stock meaning it was issued to a ski patrol unit. The swivel sling was used by them so the gun would lay flat on their back while skiing. The rear sight ramp on this gun also has the older rarer version that is still marked not in meters but in "Arshins". An arshin was a unit of measurement used under the Russian czars and is equivilent to about 28 of our inches. The famous Finnish sniper Simo Häyhä killed 542 Russian soldiers with a M/28 during the Winter War between Finland and Russia. A neat find with a lot of interesting history and an absolute steal at 90 bucks. The bore is beautiful and it shoots very nice groups as do most Finnish rifles.

Well just keep the pics coming. These are really nice pieces. It's always cool to get a deal at a shop.

Nice find.  I been browsing for a finnish m27 but the prices i'm seeing are killing me.

I did find two M28 ski troop finnish mosins with the two rear sling slots at a gun show but by the time i got home to see what they were and went back the better one was long gone.  I found out its better to read about the mosins first and then go looking for them.

It's better to just buy, then figure out what you have...... :D
