Need load for 44 mag shotshell
« on: November 26, 2008, 02:45:57 PM »
Here is what I have in stock.  Tell me what will work.

23 pcs of .44 special brass.
2 lbs. of no. 9 shot.
H-110 powder
296 ball powder
Unique powder

Can I make shotshells from the .44 special brass to shoot in my .44 mag?

If so, what load and kind of powder do you recommend?

I do need to buy some shotshell plastic cases for the .44.

Forget using the H110 and 296.  The #13 Speer manual shows 6.8 gr Unique for a 44 Mag or 6.7 gr for a 44 Special using either #7 1/2, 8, or 9 shot.  Both are loaded to 1.600 OAL according to their instructions.

For using the 44 Special brass, I assume you are talking about about taking a charged case, adding base wadding (card stock, plastic, cardboard), shot and topping it with some more wadding?  Haven't done any that way for years so I don't recall the charge I used but it was probably a moderate load of Unique.  Either will work but of course you're not going to turn you 44 into a .410 with any of these methods.

I was wanting to use some plastic shot cases that will fit down into the brass.  I have some that someone gave me for .38/.357.  I was wanting to try to find some for the .44.  Haven't found them online.  I know they make them.

I have looked and looked online and can't find the plastic shotshell cases for reloading.  Does anyone have a link?

I found them at Midway under "Empty Shot Capsules".  I do have a question.  Can you use larger shot than no. 9?  I was thinking no. 8 for a little more hit.  I would use them mostly for snake protection while walking in the woods.  However, I thought I would try them to see how much they penetrated at certain distances.

Dixie,

I've loaded these shot caps for a number of years now.  I used to own a piece of land that was just broke out with rattlers.

Use the Speer plastic caps if you can get them.  I believe my load is 6.5 grns. of Unique in the .44 Special.  Use the smallest shot you can get as these caps just don't hold very much of it, and the patterns are pretty open due to the effect of the rifling.  Frankly, #12 would work better.

I have taken a few bunnies at 15 ft. or so, and a couple of snakes at point blank range, but don't expect the shot to be effective beyond about 15 ft.  A pop can at that range will take about a dozen pellets.

I seat the filled caps with finger pressure only as far down as the case will allow, then put a mild roll crimp on them.

Hope that this has helped you, and good luck with it!   George

P.S., Beware of squib loads that leave the shot cup in the bore.  I've experienced that when I fired these in my .44 mag. with a longer barrel.  The next shot WILL get your attention!

I used bullseye or unique.  Graf's has the Speer capsules in stock http://www.grafs.com/product/199756

Be careful when crimping the shot capsules.  It doesn't take much pressure to crack or fully break them open.  Then you get shot all around your press.

In 357 shot shells, I found #6 shot to be the most accurate and deadly.  #9 pattern blew apart with the shot capsule and I couldn't find any #12 shot.  I would like to give 12 a try sometime.

Have fun.

Steve :)
