Need a little ammo help
« on: December 15, 2008, 11:45:38 AM »
Ordered Remington .308 149gr fmj bulk ammo from Sportsman Guide.
They substituted Winchester white box 147gr fmj. (1980 production)
Problem is it doesn't say .308 or 7.62 NATO. It just says 7.62. It looks right and chambers fine bit . . . 1 Question; is there anything different or anything I should be concerned about. This is just for plinking or "rainy day" ammo.

It's "Probably" the right stuff but only you can determine that as we don't have it in hand. When held side by side with a regular .308 Win round are there any noticeable differences? Check it with your calipers and if dimensionally it's right then most likely it is they just failed to fully mark the nomenclature on the box.

Just because a round fits the chamber tho doesn't make it correct for it. Still I suspect they gave you the proper ammo for your rifle.

About the only other common ammo that would be labeled 7.62 would be 7.62x39. The 308 is 51mm long, the difference should be obvious when you open the box, but if you aren't that familiar, you can measure the case length. 39mm is the russian, 51mm is a 308.

Thanks guys. The dimensions are right and it clearly isn't a 7.62x39 or 7.62x54. I just didn't know if there was any difference in pressure specs or chamber lenght (as with .223 vs 5.56)
I also wanted to be sure there wasn't some freak caliber out there I never heard of that was for some rare Jap or Nepalese .30

Call, or email, them and ask why they did that and what their thoughts are. If they say shoot it...shoot it.

I have the 7.62X39 and I shoot the 308 ammo in it with no problem.
