New to muzzleloaders

I just bought a used encore .50 muzzleloader.  Any advice on the setup/cleaning...When I bought the gun I also bought a can of triple 7, winchester triple seven 209 primers, and 300grain powerbelts.  What would be some good recommendations on powder loads for that size sabot?  Thanks all.

Hey Bio-
If you want to use the powerbelts don't use more than 100 grains (volume) with them. I used to shoot them in my encore and accuracy really drops off if you try to push them too fast. I've also heard that they tend to blow up at higher velocities too. I wouldn't know because I switched to the t/c shock-wave bullets (300 grain) with the ez-glide sabots over 130 grains of 777. With this combo I can put 5 shots into an inch at 50 yards with open sights. we cant use scopes in minnesota so I can't tell you how accurate it really is. I get about a four inch group at 100 yards but it really is hard at 100 because the front site covers most of the target.Good luck with the encore-Mine turned into my favorite deer gun.

only way to know for sure is range time to find out what it likes. I start with 75grs loose and work up from there. firing three shot groups and split swab the barrel between shots. Bullets probably don't make that big a difference but the powder charge does. Once you have a great 50yd load, move to hundred and try it.

Thanks for the great info so far.  A follow up question...what would be a good range of powder charge to experiment with (i.e. 75-125).  Also is there a minimum charge I shouldn't go below?

yes start at 75 then 3 shot gropes with a cleaning patch between shots then go 5 grains up after each group when you reach the smallest group that will be your powder charge.Simple formula to remember.You need to match the grain of bullet to rate of twist in barrle to do this you adjust powder charge by 5 grains . also please read the triple seven bottle it burns hotter than other powder.your smoke pole is rated for 150 grains of powder.  some people think they can put that charge in there and the gun should perform really well and they get made at the dealler that the groups are all over the place. and they dont listen to the magic formula of powder charge adjustment.so dont listen to your freinds take them to the range and prove it to them you could make some money i did
