300 Win Mag for coyotes?

Does anybody use a gun of this caliber to hunt coyotes? If so, what grain bullet and how much damage?

The best I can tell you is that the Coyote will be dead and you will be able to salvage the tail most of the time.  There simply is no Coyote load for a 300 win mag.  Shoot whatever you have it sighted in for, changing loads will just not matter.  Larry

where i come from, that caliber is overkill for deer.  You might have some yote slushy left.    if you arent looking to salvage the hides it will be alright.  I have used 30-06 sometimes for yotes.  It might be nice getting that extra bit of range too.  My logic behind a coyote gun has always been to go with what you are most comfortable shooting.

I appreciate your thoughts. I have never hunted coyote before, and where i hunt here in Maine, they are a HUGE problem. I have however shot many deer with my 300 and never had an exit wound larger then 1.5" to 2". To me that isn't that large at all. When I bought this rifle (the "junk" remington 710 to some) I wanted a gun for deer, moose, bear etc. The dealer had it in 3 calibers for the same price so I figured I would go big or go home. And i wanted a gun that I wouldn't really have to worry about in the nasty weather.

Use your 300 for coyote. A 180 gr bullet will not cause much damage as it is too heavy to fully expand before ripping through a yote. Now if you use a 130gr that would be a different story. I have shot 4 bears through the lungs with the 300 and 180gr bullets and had no larger than a 1 1/4 inch exit hole. A yote would be far less. Shoot one then post your results.

Strangely enough, I shot a coyote last year with my .300 WinMag. I was hunting pigs, and they didn't want to play, but I found two coyotes checking out a dead steer carcass. I shot the second yote at about 70-75 yards offhand with 180 gr power points, which knocked him down and I finished him off with the second round. Based on my sample of one, I'd try the 150 gr load, or even 130 gr, if I were reloading.

I think a .22/250 is probably more efficient, but there is no doubt that a .300 WinMag will terminate a coyote.

Shoot away my friend, shoot away.  I have never personally sold a coyote pelt.  I shoot for predator control and would use my 300 WSM in a heartbeat to take one of those calf killers out out the gene pool.  This may not be a politically correct idea, but I make no apologies for it.

I have the same issue.  All I have to hunt with is a 300 win mag.  I have some reloaded reduced recoil rounds that I had made for deer.  They are 150gr bullets beeing pushed at 2800fps which is about the same as a 308.  You could try the reduced recoil rds from remington.  Also, if you reload or know anyone who reloads, you can find recipes for 110gr, 125gr, and 130gr bullets for the 300 win mag.

If ricochets are an issue try finding a load that uses one of the 110 to 125 grain varmint bullets.

I shot big mountain coyote up by Flagstaff AZ a few years ago with a 300 H&H Magnum. I was using a Barnes X old style 165 grain. Velocity was somewhere around 3100 FPS. I hit him through both lungs behind the shoulder at 30 Yards. The exit must have been 5" across. It was gruesome yet he spun for ten seconds before he went down (like a tazmanian devil!). It is not a round for saving pelts.

I guess all I want to do is control them, selling fur is just a bonus. The winter kill was huge up here this year and I am convinced yote's had alot to do with it. I appreciate those of you who do not knock me for wanting to try this. I generally shoot 180 grain remington, but always wondered if a lighter round would cause less damage.

Mr. Coyote likes fawns anyway he can get them.  A long passed Game Warden witnessed a pack of coyotes eating a live fawn as the mother was giving birth to it. 

Studies by wildlife biogist indicate that coyotes and bears are responsible for a high percentage of the fawn kill.

Without a doubt your .300 Mag is a few steps up the ladder from my commonly carried .270 Winchester, and my standard .243 Coyote rifle.

But the activity will make you more proficient.

As more people move into rural areas the loud boom of a big rifle might stir the pot.  In some cases there are not a lot of objections because coyotes find house cats and dogs easy prey.  The are not beyond going after a kid.

My hunting partner shot a youte with his 300 win mag at 70 yards with a hand loaded 165gr. Sierra spitzer boat tail. Entered the poop chute opened the belly totally up and broke several ribs. Youte was a bang flop dead dog, so if that is all you have use it, as long as the fur is of no major worry.
Ifn't you are worried about saving the fur try the 125gr Sierra spitzer hand loaded or even the Sierra 110gr. fmj. I'd give the nod to the 125gr. however.

Light for caliber will definitely cause more fur damage. A possibility would be using a FMJ bullet(match) if it is legal to use on yotes in your place. Otherwise just use your deer load.

I am getting the .338 Lapua magnum and will definately use it on coyutes, but i'll be 800-1200 yards away though. My .270 pop's 'em out past 400 all the time. Cannot wait!

I use everything I own on coyotes from shotguns, and 17HMR up to .45-70.  All the muzzleloaders and handguns too.  I want dead coyotes.  If I can salvage the pelt, fine.  If not, objective is still accomplished.  The PETA people should be made to watch wolves and yotes eating a deer alive.  Perhaps they'd have second thoughts on the humanity of hunting.

Neighbors of mine have a large dairy, beef, sheep operation.  Lambing time and the next few weeks is the worst for coyotes.  We like to go over there in the early morning and late afternoon and save lambs.  They are really bold until they meet up with a V-Max.  My friend, the owner, parks a sided trailer along the fence for us and it makes a perfect shooting blind.

I have a night corrale adjacent to the barn for my horses.  Christmas morning, I had Coyote tracks all around the barn and inside the corrale.  They came in and out under the steel gates.

Use M60s, RPGs, claymore mines.....anything......just kill coyotes.

You can tell how much I love them.

If you can hit a coyote at 1200 yards, you ought to talk to the folks at Blackwater about a job.  Or maybe take up benchrest competitions.

I've never seen 'em sit still long enough for a bullet to get that far.
