your thoughts about Robert Garwood
« on: December 08, 2008, 08:15:16 AM »
I just finished a book by Frank Anton (great book), it is about his time in a POW camp.

I wanted to see what your thoughts about Garwood are.

That's a hard question Hofs01Lt.

On one hand, the Department of Defense (DoD) paints him as an out-and-out traitor against the United States. And from what I understand, even as recently as 1998, the Department of Defense officially changed his status as a Returnee to an AWOL, Deserter, Collaborator.

But on the other hand, Colonel Tom McKenney, the Marine sniper who was sent into North Vietnam to assassinate Garwood while Garwood was still a prisoner, later changed his mind and believed that Garwood was innocent of all charges as a collaborator with the enemy. McKenney ended up thinking he had been sent to kill Garwood not because Garwood was a traitor, but rather to cover up the Government's mess of betraying Garwood. Here's a link to some info about McKenney's story:

I'm not sure what to think of Garwood. Both the DoD and other sources seem to have made good cases for and against Garwood. I'm sort of split right up the middle.

As for the link you posted it was about a book where Garwood was the sole source.

http://www.miafacts.org/libel.htm

The libel and slander suit against Monika Jensen and her publisher has been settled (December 16, 1999).  Jensen has admitted to the libel and slander and, under the terms of the settlement:
(1) Jensen and her publishers will pay a sum of money to Dr. Kushner, and,
(2) Jensen will publish in the New York Times and in Dr. Kushner's hometown newspaper a statement admitting that she is guilty of libel and slander and that Garwood was her sole source

Now that's an interesting turn of events.

So is McKeeney still around to collaborate anything that Jensen wrote about him, or did McKeeney ever voice this same opinion with any other sources?

I do not think there is any truth that has come from Garwood.
