Scope won't zero on 500
« on: December 03, 2008, 03:13:49 AM »
I had been taking my 3x9 off of my AR (with tactical rings) and using it on my 500 for Primitive weapon season. This year I bought a new 2x7 Burris with German #4 reticle. I put Burris high rings on the gun, but it still shoots 3" low. I've run out of adjustment. I'm thinking I need to buy some extra high rings so it will zero. Any suggestions would be appreciated. THANKS

Sounds like you may need to shim your front ring. Or get some Burris ring with the adjustable inserts. 8)

I think if you are still shooting low, higher rings probably won't help enough in my experience. You will have to either shim the rear ring, or get the Burris rins with inserts that are offset by .005 or .010. I had a similar problem with a Ruger 77/22, and the Burris rings worked perfectly with the right inserts. HTH, Billy

Shimming the rear ring is a sure way to ruin the scope, either shim under the rear of the base or get Burris Signature Zee rings and a set of the offset inserts and do it safely.  ;)

You might check into getting a canted base...

While I agree with the premise of the advice so far, in that the rings may need to be adjusted. But what if the adjustment is to bring them back to square. IE you have a mixed set of rings or the base is not mounted correctly? Check and be sure of your base and rings that its mounted in?

I mean is the base mounted correctly to the barrel. be sure its got nothing between the base and the barrel and the radius is the same as the barrel. Remmove the base and screws, wrap a piece of sand paper around the barrel and scrub the base back and fourth across the sand paper. this will show and make the base correctly fir to the barrels contour. Now for the rings. be sure that they are same brand and height. Just because they may be new or out of the same package doesn't eliminate the possibility that they are wrong. I'm thinking you may find a problem with what you have rather than a problem with the scope. Savy?

If this comes up unfruitful, try another scope. Use a known good scope.

I played with hi powered air rifles some time back and found that no matter what I did the scope would not offer enough elevation to get me on target. I tried a couple scopes and ring combos... then I found out that this was COMMON PLACE on my RWS rifle and the factory made an adj base to compensate. Once I got everything square and true the adjustments of the scope easily got me on target and shooting accurately.

you may also need to go to a 30mm tube scope if your running out of vertical adjustment or a near or farrell 20 moa base. they compensate for longer range shooting...

A canted base for a Handi?
