Huntsman sling support point
« on: December 02, 2008, 01:26:29 PM »
Maybe it's just the fact that I'm using a syn. stock set on my Huntsman, but it wants to tip over into the muzzle-down position and it dunks into the snow too often, especially going down steep hills, hanging onto branches and trunks to keep from falling and not able to always control the muzzle location. Is there a way to mount the forward swivel on the ramrod thimble or any other way to locate the forward swivel to enable a muzzle -up carry?       Ken

Uncle Mike's makes a ramrod thimble mounted sling stud for TCs, it may work.

I believe either Williams Gun Sight Company or Uncle Mikes used to make a sling adapter to fit ramrod thimbles.

Put about 24 ounces of shot in a sock and put it in the stock and it'll sling better and help soak up recoil.  I put 36 oz. in my '06 and it slings straight up and down and with 180 gr. bullets, recoils like a .357.  Pete

Thanks to all of you.   Czar , that WAS a thought to consider!    I discovered that there is even more to this problem. All of that swivel exercising loosened the swivel/ramrod retention spring nut, the ramrod is in an unknown snow pile, and I get to carry my range rod for the rest of my hunt. There WILL be  a locking nut added to the ramrod retainer screw assy. ,a stainless swivel, silver -soldered to the dovetailed thimble , and a measurement of the muzzle height in relation to my head while the rifle is slung! The ramrod ---- ,well it's in a known area about 100 yds. long and if the drifting snow exposes it ,fine . If not --- Turkey season weather should expose it. Now, I'm in the market for a stainless/ nickel swivel.  I lost a very good-sized deer due to a too-thick glove ,inexperience with my Huntsmans much lighter trigger pull and too much confidence in the situation ,so I earned another day or six in the woods. How's that for punishment?  Low and to the right by 6 feet on a 100 yd . shot !      Ken

Kody; I put a small amount of locktite the kind you use on scope rings and mounting blocks on the the screw and it stays tight. But I understand what you mean by placing it on the timble. You've learned a valueable lesson and thats what I like about hunting. Always learning how to be prepared. Some spring morning when you're listening to that gobler and the song birds singing you'll find that ram rod.  Jenks

I just went through the same sling stud issue on my Huntsman and stupid me, I just tightened it all up again.  I had the Locktite sitting right here in a drawer :-[  Some days you just don't think.  I'll get smart for a change, take it apart and do it right.
