Introduction and 45LC question
« on: December 06, 2008, 08:53:12 AM »
I'd like to take a moment to introduce myself.
I'm Justin and I reside in north Texas.

I have yet to buy my first handi, but i'm dropping all the right hints with the wife for Christmas!!!

I noticed a lot of discussion on the 45LC, and wanted to know if anyone has used the +P or "Heavy" factory loads on whitetail or hogs?
I would think that the Bufalo Bore 325 grain that sings at 1325FPS should be a potent killer, but I would love to hear someone that has actually used this round or something similar in the field.

I haven't taken any with the Handi, but have 2 other rifles, 16" Trapper and 454 92 that has mostly hot 45 colts run thru it.  Think of it as a mini 45-70 coming out of a rifle barrel if it's loaded to published limits for the TC and Ruger.  I use LilGun in mine and did use H-110 alot before.  The right bullet with those loads and I would have no problem taking an Elk out to 100 yards.  (In season and with tag of course ::)).  44 mag or 45 colt hot load, couldn't tell the difference on either end of the gun.  DP

Welcome aboard Justin!! I don't have any field experience with mine other than paper, but I have shot 250gr jacketed handloads using TC/Ruger data, I get over 1900fps in the 20" barrel with max loads of Li'gun. Grampa Mike has tested 300gr cast bullets in his, that info is in the FAQs and Help sticky (hint ..hint  ;D) but here's the link to his results.  ;)

The 45 LC barrel will be my first acessory barrel for my Handi.  Currently it is a 45/70, and my plan is to get a youth stock setup and the 45 LC barrel and put together a nice combination for my son.  Depending on the balance, I may even cut down the 45 LC barrel for easier handling for him.  I figure I can start him on very light 45 LC loads and gradually heat them up as he gets bigger, then ream it out to a 454 Casull and eventually he can graduate up to the 45/70.  He can in sorts "grow up with the rifle".  He just turned 4, so it will be awhile before he can actually shoot it, but in the meantime I can have some fun with it.

I have shot many many deer with a hot loaded 45Colt.

I prefer the 300's but a well constructed 250 will also work very well. the Speer 300SP has done the most for me, I like the looks and performance of the Sierra, but its too long for the levers. Of coarse that's not an issue for the Handi.  I also shoot some 325Gr hard cast bullets from Ranger Rick that shoot very well.

With a stiff load of 296 and that Speer 300SP, I have shot thru two different whitetails end to end. The Sierra has accounted for a couple good hogs in the 250-325lb class from my Bisley. My buddie borrowed that one one day on a hog hunt, the guy he was with had told him to leave it holstered and shoot his '06 as he had seen many 44 Mag's "bounce" off. (More likely bad shots. As its NEVER the hunters fault... but I digress...) Some time later, right in front of that guy my friend performed a BANG FLOP, FLOP, FLOP with a head shot. I think I may have a small video.. let me check... Sorry no I found it, but it needs to be cropped and converted, its a DVD.

Long story short, you will be very satisfied with it with T/C or Ruger loads for Hogs and Whitetails.
