Handload for 45/70 buff classic?
« on: December 12, 2008, 10:41:10 AM »
Hi another newbie here.
I have a question for those with  experience.  I am just starting reloading and bought 300 grain hollow point bullets to load for the buffalo classic.  I have a good amount of IMR4895 powder on hand and was wanting to use it.  The Lyman and Lee manuals I bought don't list combinations with this powder and bullet weight though they use this powder with different bullet weights?  Can I use this combination and what load would be recommended?   ???  I would sure appreciate any ideas or thoughts from anyone.

The IMR data site uses this for a start load:

IMR 4895    57.0gns      1826 fps   2.525 OAL   21,700 cup

If you want bullet specific data, you'll have to provide which bullet you're using, but Hodgdon lists IMR4895 for a 300gr cast bullet as well as the 300gr Sierra HP that I'd work with for any 300gr jacketed bullet, just use the start load in either the trapdoor or 1895 data and work up. I wouldn't go into the modern rifle data tho unless it's a Nosler partition and you make it past the pain of recoil of the 1895 loads!! ;D

Thanks Joe and Tim ;D

It is a jacketed hollow point hornady.  I guess that means I could use 1895 loads.  Would that be correct?

The Hornady 5th doesn't list that powder, but I'd still work with the Hodgdon/IMR data for the Sierra in either trapdoor or 1895 data, the fastest they recommend pushing it is 2200fps which is probably about where you'll want to call it quits due to the recoil anyway!!  ;)

switching to 4198( either brand) will need approx 10 gr. less powder to achieve the same (2100-2200 fps) level as using 4895 with less recoil.

I've loaded with H4895 powder using a Remington 300gr HP bullet. It was packed with 57grs and had a listed velosity of around 2100fps(I think). trust me when I say you won't want to shoot this load alot. I had the bruises to prove it. I since switched to 41 grs of IMR4198 and just love it. Listed veloisty is about 1800fps and it shoots like a 20ga.

Thanks BBF and Aldar

If a person loads lighter say to trap door loads would that help or should a guy save the 4895 for the 30/30. :-\

H4198 is "the stuff" if you want maximum velocity from 300 grain bullets.  You should get 2500 fps easy with that big long barrel.

That 57 grain load is a starting trapdoor load. Stick with 4198.

Unfortunately H4198 didn't work much better in the 32" barrel for me, velocity for 56gr of H4198 under the 300gr Nosler PP gets me 2425fps in the 22" barrel, but only 2450fps in the 32" barrel. With H322 I get 150-200fps more velocity with 350gr bullets in the 32" barrel over the 22", same for IMR4198 and 350gr bullets, haven't tried them with 300gr bullets yet. ;)

Hodgdon shows to 60 grains in lever gun loads, 4 grains more and you might hit 2600 fps!
