Wow, This is a great Idea Very inexpenseive to build and sounds great! Loud enough to make my wife yell to turn it down from the second floor and I'm in the basement- Kevin....... However i did not disable the volume control on the amp, just the speaker. It will go to full volume with out distortion using the MP3 calls. I also left the amp in the original housing. The speaker is from an old "Johnny Stewart" E call I had that only played cassette tapes.

Nice job on the packaging and very resourcefull of you to salvage that speaker. What do you figure that you saved in cost? I would guess around $188. as compared to a high end unit.

These are very versitile as they can be packaged even in a duffle bag. I have one that I plug into a bottom of the line Johnny Stewart call and the sound is great using an external speaker. My son-in-law has commandered this and also uses his MP3 player and has the added versitility of being able to download sounds.
Here is a little more on the basics that this setup needs...

I'm not sure what I saved?? I had most of the stuff already. The MP3 player was a gift and the caller was more was more than 10 years old.. The parts from radio shack cost under $30.00.  I wonder if it's worth making it wireless??  (nady 351) - Kevin Also I downloaded the zip file from varmint Al's website are there anymore available that you know of??

The wireless setup is very doable but does get into some dinero.
The AZden WLX-Pro is designed for camera use but works very well with devices such as a voice recorder, portable CD player, or an MP3 and the setup is easy as it uses the same 1/8" jacks making it a simple plug N play application.

Range is reported to be good for 200yds (out in the open) but your amp/speaker end  needs the six foot cord as it acts like an antenna. The benifits are that you can keep your Mp3 on your person along with the transmitter.
The liabilitys are the cost...around $150 I believe and a somewhat bulky remote (mp3+transmitter)
You might know of a better way. Perhaps a servo from a lower end R/C  car could act as an interupt (or switch) to make or break contact with a speaker wire?. Most of these should be good for 200ft.

Would almost seem better to go with the delayed download sounds so as to keep your attention out where the speaker is located which would greatly reduce the urge to swap sounds & fiddle with the menu on the mp3 thust reducing undue movement on your part.
Good luck & be sure to let us know how yours works out.

I've got his ( Varmint AL)  20 and 16 minute sequence on my MP3 player.  they both have a 2 minute silence before the calls start.I figure this will be more than than enough to get set up  ;) - Kevin

Thanks everybody for all the directions. I made one last night that works great. I actually bought the smallest tool box that I could get at walmart. I mounted the speaker on the front and put everything else inside. It works great b/c there is enough room for spare batteries, extra calls, and a couple of other small items.
Thanks again!

For years I used a Walkman, plugged into a small portable amp.  The amp came with two speakers made to plug into portable radio for a back yard/outdoor sound system.  I used that for probably 15 years, before I got my first Johnny Stewart Caller.

Nice Job!  This is a dumb question but I assume the power is drawn from the mp3 player itself? Ie the unit dosen't have its own battery power supply???

Banen, the Radio Shack amplifier (pictured above) takes a common 9v battery.

Spy231, I had considered your idea myself. A six dollar Stanley tool box would not only house a speaker (say one of those round 5" 30watt models...$8.00) but also hold other stuff as you said.
Might also be able to install a mailbox type arm to suspend a weasle ball or something like that.

You all sure do make it hard for an old boy from Fence Lake NM. we did not have Electric power, Running water, And the plumbing consisted of a little house out back. In the 1930s we did not know Ohms or volts or any of the other stuff you all are talking about. BUT it sure sounds great to hear you all talk about it. Being sort of backwards i had to buy me a Fox Pro to do my calling, Made my lips sore calling and nothing but trash would come in, You know { like Coyotes, Fox, Bob Cats, Mt Lion } and other trash like that. Truth is, I think its great that you all can come up with all this great stuff and enjoy your selves and save money to boot. Keep up the good work and let us know how you are doing and thanks for the entertainment........Joe...........

I did not even think about that. Thanks for the advice!

I now use a Cass Creek Power Horn speaker and alternate between a Cass Creek caller, My Fox Pro, or an MP3 player.  The Power Horn uses a wire, but at least it gets it out of my lap, and I can control the sounds and volume from my seat.

Where can I get that speaker cheaper?
Radio Shack is $25 and Speco-5 is only $10, but the shipping is another $15.

Where did you find them and how much?
Thanks.
