I just bought a Cabela's Hawken Kit gun

Hey Everyone,
I just purchased a Cabela's Hawken Kit gun.  The wood is rough and unfinished and the barrel needs to be blued.  What are your suggestions for finishing the wood and for bluing the barrel.  Are some bluing products better than others? This is a new thing for me.  I needed a winter project!

Laurel Mountain Forge  Barrel brown & degreaser!

As for a wood finish, that stock should be black english walnut. Normally all you have to do is add tru-oil or any type of gun stock finish to seal it.

Heres a great plains rifle i did. I applied 30+ coats *Stopped counting LOL* of Boiled linseed oil *hand rubbed* into the stock over several months. No stain or anything! Just the oil

10-4 on the linseed oil finish.  Did my Renegade 18 years ago and it still looks great.  I don't know why people say linseed won't dry.  Totally agree on the browning the metal.  Plumbrown looks great and is faster to do but is not as durable as true rust browning.  Browned metal is more authentic looking to me.

Depends on what type of finish you want on the stock.  For a "factory" look, multiple wet sandings on 600+ grit wet/dry cloth followed by multiple hand rubbed True Oil or Tung Oil  will do that.  Wet sanding with a spar or urethane varnish will fill in the pores nicley leaving a shiney smooth finish.  Multiple hand rubings with Boiled Linseed Oil will give that traditional look.  Let dry several days between coats.
