I'm still confused.
« on: December 13, 2008, 04:14:26 PM »
OK guys, I'm still confused. What should I be looking for? I know that you guys said that the kenwoods were good stuff, and that the trans-oceanics were good, but what else? I did a quick search on eBay and saw a couple of kenwoods and a couple of old zeniths. But I don't like to use eBay or pay-pal. I'm looking to get into this hobby, and would like to pick up a nice used transceiver, that way if I should choose to transmit someday. I am really kinda funds limited. Kinda looking at maybe the $100 - $150 range. Am I asked for to much in my price range? Please help. I also believe that my grandfather used to play around with shortwave. But i have never heard him talk about it other than putting up an antenna next to his house, and remembering the antenna there from when I was a little younger. I am going to go talk to him in the morning to see if he still has anything left and if he can show me what I should be looking for. But any help I can gt from you guys is greatly appreciated.

Jump, this link will take you to the reviews of several radios, these reviews are not written by some professional writer, they are written by people who have owned/used the receiver and posted their opinions and pro's and con's, it really is a good place to start.
http://www.eham.net/reviews/products/8
here is one you should check: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/1534
Key words to look for are sensitivity and selectivity
Also, in my opinion, a home without one of these is a home with no insurance: http://www.eham.net/reviews/detail/2573   or   one of the other wind up radios that eaton' or grundig make that are sold at radioshack, they have am, fm, weather and shortwave or tv audio.  They can be powered by AC w/adapter, AA batteries or an internal NiCad battery with a hand crank generator.  They all have an LED light some have a siren and some will charge a small appliance like a cell phone or small flashlight.
They are not great receivers but late in the afternoon if you start to play around the shortwave bands you'll usually find MANY stations, enough that they start piling on top of one another but you should be able to find a few that you can pull out.  I think that these are a good start and they are only about $40 and you need one anyway.

Jump, here in south central Kentucky, we have enough tornado's, storms with high winds and drunks running to power poles that it isn't a rare occasion to have a power outtage.  These little radios can be wound up and will run for an hour or two on a charge, the LED light isn't really bright untill you turn it on in a blacked out house.  I use mine with the hand crank most of the time but keep new batteries in it and an extra set in the case along with a mini Mag lite and extra batteries (total of 10 AA's).  We've been in the position that this was the evenings entertainment many times.  There is a local Ham radio club that operates a very high profile 2 meter repeater. We lucked out and have free use of an abandoned TV tower and our antenna is at 850' above ground level and the antenna site is the second highest spot in the county.  We have coverage from southern Indiana to central Tennessee.
When I became intrested in amature radio, I knew no one involved in the hobby to teach me, so I just memorized the test for the Tech. liscense and found a test site and passed the test.  I used the web site mentioned to learn what I could about the various 2m radios and my son found one used in the next county over that was for sale.  A Radio Shack antenna and power supply and I was on the air and hooked.  Had I known then what I know now I would have spent a little more on radio.  Not that I didn't get a good radio, I did infact it is still hard to beat for a single band radio.  Don't buy an antenna, you can build your own.  You can make a GOOD antenna for less than $20 and a good antenna for less than $5.  Do not buy 75 ohm TV coax, it works well in come cases but until you know what those cases are stick with 50 ohm.  You will never have enough 50 ohm coax.  It's a lot like lead, you never have enough.
Sorry, but that's the best I can do for this installment, I'm at work.  When you have more questions, post'em.  I can tell that I'm not the only one that enjoys this.

I tried to PM you JS ,but it kept saying  that i needed to put a topic in the message .
When i did it came back the same way , i haven't tried it this morning but it works to other members i sent a PM to.
I have a line on a Realistic ,like i showed it is the very same radio ,it is New and was supposed to be sent back for warranty ,except the guy who had it put a battery in backwards and couldn't ever get it to work on battery's.
Im going to try and get it ,and they want $60.00 for it ,and if you want it i will give you their names.
It is from a Radio Shack store that closed and was changing hands.

Thanks for the offer Phalanx, but I'm going to have to pass on it as of right now. Shortly after 5 a.m. yesterday morning someone diecide that they wanted to break the side window out of my Blazer Xtreme just because they could. And then they didn't even take anything. So for atleast right now all of my radio money is tied up in a window for my ride. Thanks again guys for the help.
