Surplus Flare Pistols
« on: December 02, 2008, 10:36:59 AM »
Looking around for 7.62x54R and 7.62x25 ammo on line  I came across Polish and West German 26.5mm flare pistols w/ accessories ($30-$40) and a variety of flare cartridges ($30-$40 / 10).  These are relatively inexpensive and look to be a lot of fun!  26.5mm to 12Ga adapters are also available allowing the use of the 12Ga flares used by boaters in the United States.  Best of all they are legal in California...

;D I have one of the Polish 26.5 flare guns and found a bunch of surplus Czech flares at Dan's Ammo about a year ago. They really lit up our 4th of July and make excellent signal flares. They estimate their altitude at 300 meters and I concur. + they burn out before hitting the ground. They would definitely be a fire hazard if fired horizontally. I haven't tried the smoke cartridges yet but may on New Years Eve if it is damp enough. :D

I don't know the model #s, but I have a West German, a Czech and a Polish one. All in new condition.

The German one has a black anodized aluminum barrel and frame. I don't care for it much. The Czech one is steel, painted grey with a chromed bore and brown phenolic grips. Very nice. The Polish one is the same design as the Czech but with a very nice blued finish and black plastic grips (no chrome bore). Better fit and finish than the others.

Two thumbs up for the Polish one overall. I paid $20 for it about a year ago.

PIcked up a couple unissued Pols a few years back, never bought flares as I am too cheap.   If I DID buy flares I would shoot them off though, Speeding is illegal as well.

The fine for speeding is in most cases reasonable. Paying for the dispatch of EMG. personal and vehicles could be quite expensive .
When we dig we get cleared from Miss Utility . You get an inquire number for the dig . I did all that and Miss Utility missed the adt wires that were located in a conduit , I cut thru. with a saw ( noise ) so I did not notice that 5 fire companies had showed up as i was in a hole and had no way to see. The building was full of non replaceable objects beloning to the state and when the adt wires got cut it set off fire and break in alarms . The standard pratice is for all companies to respond as each has a section of the building and start hosing the roof . I was detained and told each fire truck would cost me $1500.00 for the false alarm , lots of trucks were there . I had the inquire number and was in the right and had nothing to pay . Enjoy shooting a flare if you want , I offered only to save you some cash , BTW you can get pratice loads that shoot but don't have the flare .
ENJOY!

Fireworks and firing guns in the air are illegal in my state to. Doesn't stop anyone from lighting them up on July 4th and New Years Eve. The LEO's just watch. (I do think discharging live ammo into the air is pretty stupid)

People around here use them for bear protection in 12 ga. Not worth a Federal charge in my view.

Check your state laws. I think the red flares mean Emergency, while either the white or green are for practice. Google search this and see if you can find out. I think it varies by location and the type of flare shot. I have one of the Polish guns with the case and lanyard. Picked this up for around $30 with the case. These, the ones without the trigger guard, are copies of the Russian SP-Sh2 M44 flare pistol used in WWII and later in the Cold War era.
They may still use them in Russia, in fact. Century Arms still has these for sale, and there are several dealers who sell these online as they can be mailed, and bought without a ffl.

I have a squeeky clean record and have my CCW permit and my FFL03 and maybe want to get into legal full auto stuff someday so i would think twice about shooting a flare gun without inquiring first about it.  My point is play it safe and ask about it first nowadays we have too much to lose if were wrong.  Trust me the'll look for any excuse too.  With all this homeland crap things have changed for sure, there are so many new laws.
