9422 M accuracy
« on: August 26, 2003, 05:46:04 PM »
I recently picked up a 9422M which is about 6 years old and which appears to be virtually unused, outside and down the bore.  This rifle has the stock open sights.  Firing it for the first time last weekend (CCI Mini Mags), at 50 yards, with the rear sight set for greatest elevation, it shoots about 2" low, although the group is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch.  Obviously, mounting a scope will cure this problem, but I don't understand how this could be typical.  I would think that it should shoot somewhere dead on at about 100 yards, with the rear sight set to 1/2 to 3/4 elevation.

Has anyone else encountered such performance?

I SECOND jcm:

I just looked at my 9422 rear sight elevator, and there is nothing to stop it from falling out except the spring tension of the rear sight.

Try making a higher replacement with a strip of mild steel.  20 minutes of file work should do it.  Heat blue and oil.

deecee,

I don't know about anyone else, but I have had some trouble with older winchester 9422M's.  The first gun I bought at a gun show was an xtr model.  I didn't notice it when I bought the gun, but the sights weren't on straight, infact the barrel wasn't lined up straight.  The next mag I got was a pre-xtr and its barrel wasn't on straight either. (I got my money back on that one)  If I was you, I would check to make sure the barrel is on straight by taking it down and seeing if the two groves in the barrel are running perfectly horizontal.  If it is, the sights should be on straight also.  The first gun I bought shot about a foot low, and that's when I noticed the sights.  I never shot the second gun.
I just bought a new 9422M and it shoots great.  About 2 notches on the elevator puts it right on at 100 yards.  Sorry I didn't offer any suggestions, but I thought I would tell you my experience.

HammerMan/LongbowMan, just goes to show you that any company can send out a gun that quality control misses. I have a Henry 22 mag and it shot great right out of the box. I have heard of a few times that some one online said Henry had the same problem with there barrels. That may be so but I have not heard of any guns in my area. In fact the gun shop I go to has never had one come back and they have sold a bunch of them. I guess it can be a problem with any gun as I have heard about barrel probs with other brands also. The great thing about Henry is that they have a excellent customer service dept and will solve all and any problems you may have. Unfortunately not all gun companies are like that.  Glad your new gun is good and the barrel is properly fitted.  Jim
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.
