20 or 12 USH ?

I have a 20 USH and have not killed a deer with it yet but I loaned it to a friend who has killed two with it. The first was an eight point at 40 yds, made a bad shot and hit it in the guts but dropped him in his tracks. The second was a big doe at 45 yds and he hit her high but took out the top of her lungs and bottom of the spine, it also dropped in it's tracks. Now he has been converted to a USH and wants to buy one just like mine, he does not like heavy recoil and I do not mind it so I am thinking of selling mine to him and getting a 12 ga USH. Should I keep the 20 or go with a 12 ? Who has both and what do you think ? The gun will shoot clover leafs at 50 yds with the 2 3/4 buckhammers and I rarely have any shots or 75 yds in the woods around here.

I took many deer with a 20 ga as a kid and I never felt under gunned.  The 20 gauge is ultra lethal for whitetails and with the yardage you shoot as stated, I would see no reason to part with what you have.  I have never taken deer much over 40 yds with a 20ga as mine was an old smooth bore single shot with a bead, but it sounds like guys have had success out at 150yds and beyond with a good dialed in 20 ga slug gun.

I have a NEF Tracker II in 12 ga and it kicks like a mule.  It doesn't bother me, but it does kick.  I'm sure the 12 ga USH kicks less, as weighs about 100 lbs (just kidding) but that thing is heavy.  If you do a lot of walking while hunting I wouldn't recommend it.

In an USH, I'd go w/the 20 gauge.  Less recoil, plenty of ammo choices and the deer are just as dead.

What more could you ask for?

I agree, in the USH I would stay with the 20 gauge. I have Tracker I's and Tracker II's in both 12 and 20, however my only USH is in 20 gauge, my decision and my preference...<><....:)

MSP, How heavy is your USH in the 20 ga?  Is it tough to lug around?  Is it balanced well?

It is quite a bit heavier than my Tracker I's and II's and for me it is more of a gun I tend to take it I am going to be on stand most of the time. I have not weighed it but can put it on the old trusty bathroom scale if you are interested....<><....:)

Just do like me.... buy the 12 ans KEEP BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D

 I haven't really wrung out the 20, I found a good shooting load in the Win silver box BRI slugs and stopped shooting. But The 12 has been shot allot and likes the Buck Hammers and LOVES the Cor-lokt premiums. I haven't shot the 20$ a box green tip, probably will not. But it will keep BOTH touching at 100, the prem shoot about 2" higher and that works out perfect for my long range load!!  So for me its Bucks Hammers out to 100 sited dead on and premiums past 100.

No need to weigh it MSP, but thanks anyway.  I am going to take a closer look at the ULSH and the USH in 20 ga if I can find them both locally and make a decision based on that.  More than likely I will buy one of them along with a 45LC barrel when I send in my SB2 later this winter.  I succumbed to the urges today though as I picked up a Taurus 24/7 OSS SOCOM in 9mm when browsing through my local Sportsman's warehouse, so I will probably need to hold off for a little while on the NEF barrels for a little while or the wife will get a bit irritated.  She just doesn't understand the game.

1st let me say I am a fan of the 20ga since switching 2yrs ago even though I was a bit surprised at how much recoil the actually have more than I expected. That said I have killed 6 deer the last 2 yrs with one, last yr the USH and this yr with the ULSH all with buckhammers. The buckhammers just got me a little mifed I have only had one pass thru and have recovered the slugs they have great expansion and have never not put the deer down under 50 yrds after the shot> The last one was a small deer running at me at hyper speed that had already been hit by another in our party and had part of it's entrails hanging out,  I shot from the hip at about 3 feet thru both lungs hitting ribs on both sides dropped about 40 yrds from me I fully expected the other side to be blown out but that was not the case. I will keep shooting these until they stop killing deer .Just hard for me to believe that only one passed thru. Very seldom did the 12ga not go completly thru just food for thought my belief is that the 20 has plenty of velocity to kill deer but that it is disapated very quickly once inside. I can count on one hand how many times I've shot in my area over 50 though.Kurt

There isn't a deer alive that a 20 won't kill.  I killed a bunch with the 12 gauge but then I got a 20 USH and never looked back.  Less noise, less recoil, most rounds are flatter shooting, and they kill deer good.

My friend had pass thrus on both and both fell instantly. I was wondering since I don't mind the recoil if there would be any advantages of the 12 over the 20 inside of 100yds?

I would say little to no difference.

But since we all know bigger is better...  ::) ::)

 In my case, I had the 12 first. It by far the most accurate 12GA slug gun I have ever seen. I kind of have an affinity for it. ;D I have all the faith that the little 20 will prove to be just as good. Like I said I just haven't had the chance to really shoot it...yet.

Well I guess after the replies I will keep mine and let him get his own  ;) Like I stated before I hardly every get a shot during rifle season that I could not kill with my bow. I am really looking forward to getting one with it myself.

Much more ammo available for the 12's.  They don't kick bad to me.  I even take the weight out and flute the barrel to reduce weight further.  Get the 12!!!!
