The only problem with that kind of slow descent is that any wind will carry the re-entry vehicle farther away.

what you see is a 6ft drouge chute, I got it off e-bay. I made the bail from 3/16 steel rod, use some surplus ss clevis, the main cord is 1in. nylon flat cord, the base of the shell is 3/4 in plate I mach. a step on it to hold the tube. the tube is from a hog roller that they use in farrowing pens, they are getting hard to find, because they rust away real fast. a 1/2 bolt is drilled to.190" dia. to hold the fuse, the head of the bolt is dished out and filled with lead, this is  used to stake the fuse and to make it tight so no combustion can get by. the inside of the plate has a small combustion chamber, it hold 35 grs. of fff black.. the trick is to get the charge to go off when the shell is just before max height.

Neat Idea Gerald,

The model rocket guys us a small altimeter device that will set a charge off at apogee to blow out a chute or the altimeter can deploy a streamer at apogee and a chute out at a lower altitude at say 300' (adjustable). The G forces from the mortar launch is much less then some of the rockets I've seen.

Nice photo's,
