T/C Encore 7mm-08
« on: October 23, 2003, 06:05:45 AM »
Please help.  I purchased a new 7mm-08 and I am having problems getting consistent groups.  Usually the first shot is 1" at 100 yds. Then it seems to begin to rise about 1" each shot, 5 minutes between shots. I am using 140 gr. Winchester balistic tip ammo.  Other times they spread all over the target, but in about a 4" diameter pattern within the red.  I have shot about 30 rounds and have not cleaned the barrell.  Could it be possible I received a bad barrell ?

I had the exact same problem w/ my 7M-08 except when the barrel got hot it would shoot fantastic.  Each shot would be about an inch higher than the last one for about 4 shots.  Then the barrel would be very hot and it would shoot great.  I called Thompson and talked to one of the gunsmiths.  He had me send it down and to call a few days later to make sure it got there.  I called and they were already sending me a new barrel.  My guess is that the barrel was warped and when it got hot enough it straightened out and luckily would shoot straight.  So give Thompson a call, and ask to speak to one of their gunsmiths.  I talked to Ron.

had the same problem with my 7mm-08 bbl. 4" groups were about all it would do. sent it back and they shipped me a new bbl and it does fine. they never told me what was wrong with the old one.

Hey MBP,

What are you shooting out of your 7m-08 barrel?  Bullet and load.  I have been trying partitions with no luck.  Ballistic tips are 1.5" which I do not consider real good.

Balistic tip 7mm-08 - Bad Choice
« Reply #4 on: November 12, 2003, 09:05:31 AM »
The solution to my problem was the balistic tip ammo.  I went to the plain Federal Classic 150 gr. and now have 1" at 100 yds.  Apparently the barrell could not handle the balistic tipped ammo.  I am now a "Happy Camper".

After reading all the bad press about these rifles and still decided to buy one, I thought I made a really big mistake.  I am happy that I stuck it out, because I really like this rifle.
