Whats the truth about the Muzzleloading barrels for the G2 not fitting or workin

"safely" in a contender frame? I mean if Gonic's can offer  45 caliber ML barrels for the old style TC frame why can't T/C offer barrels than can be used on both type of guns(like was origionally promised when the G2 first was announced).  I've heard the G2 ML barrels can be modified to work on an older Contender frame, just how safe is this practice & and how easy is it to do?

I just had my old-style, easy open frame returned from T/C.  I accidently had my G2 and the older one disasembled and on the bench at the same time.  Of course, I put the ML barrel on the wrong frame.  It wouldn't close because of a pin sticking down from the barrel (it's put there so you wouldn't do such a thing).  Something broke in the frame since it wouldn't cock or fire any more.

The bright side is that I now have a frame with all new interior parts, and thanks to T/C's fantastic warranty it only cost me the cost of shipping the frame to T/C.  That's right, they fixed it and returned it at no charge!  Thanks, T/C!

By the way, I have other 23" carbine barrels that fit on both frames interchangably.  I don't know why, but T/C doesn't want you to put the ML barrels on old frames.  It doesn't seem to have anything to do with pressure, but they have some reason I'm sure.

You may be able to find the original source here if you search, or the poster may answer.  Someone asked TC and their answer is that the original frames could get more residue from the black powder that G2s, and were harder to clean.  I never gave it much thought since I don't have bp barrels for my contenders.

I'm Unsure on the 45cal BP barrels , But the 50 Cal BP barrels are only Meant for the G-2 Actions. The Breech thrust will stretch the Old style frames... A friend Of Mine Had problems with His G-2 frame stretching While using his 50cal BP Barrel. T/C Replaced the frame for him. That is the reason for the safety Pin on the BP barrels.

See my reply #1.  The .45 BP barrels are meant for the G2 frame only.  They also have the pin.

Gonic's (Gonic once a T/C employee) owns the patent rights to fit a muzzle loader barrel on the contenders. T/C would not buy the rights from Gonic, When T/C made the G2 so they could then put a muzzle loader(ML) barrel on the G2. The G2 ML barrel had a pin extention whereby it could not be put on the contender frames.  This what that I have been told.

Very Good Point!!!  Never thought about it that way!  What about a BP Barrel would stretch the frame??? I know for a fact , that was the Only barrel ever used on Jim's Frame. That's the Only barrel he had.  The barrel had A Nice gap between the Barrel and frame and would not lock up Right. Would One be able to put enough force , When loading to bend or stretch the frame?? For the life of me I can't see How. Had to be something Cause it or T/C would not have replaced it..

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure "some" force is applied to the frame when shooting a muzzle loader barrel.  I wouldn't consider holding a muzzle loader barrel alone in my hand and firing it.  My Encore and even some my some of my sidelocks deliver a d--m good kick when shootin' the smoke.  But I still don't see the force on the standing breech to be the problem.  I don't remember the source, but I had heard Keith's reasoning before as well.

tlyne has it right.  Gonic Arms patented the ML barrel for the old style Contender.  There was a legal battle and TC lost.  When the factory burned, they redesigned the Contender on the Encore platform as the G2.  They then offered a ML barrel.

I have one of each in 45 and 50.  They make a great carrying rifle!
