Fixed replacement sights for Springfield Champion
« on: March 08, 2009, 06:48:01 AM »
I am having a time finding some simple fixed sights to replace the factory rear sights on a customer's  Springfield Champion. The Yost-Bonitz retro sight that Brownell's listed sounded perfect but they have been dropped. He wants something that will just slide in the existing dovetail and would prefer a wider notch. Thanks for any suggestions.    greer

This may seem very callous on the surface, I assure you that I don't mean it that way.
What he wants may not be what he can get.
There are a number of good quality fixed sights on the market. Most of them have a propietary dovetail cut size. I say that they are easily changed because the one wo does this for mine seems to have no problems.
I suspect that he wants too save money, and, in these times that is a very good thought, however; it may not be possible.
You just need to check the size of the dovetail and look around. Most will take some fitting, I suspect.

greer:  I don't wanna sound dumb here, but why can't you just open up the notch on the current rear sight with a Swiss file?????

No dumb question at all. The factory sights on this pistol are the very small mil-spec type with the tiny little front sight. He just wanted someting a little easier to see in general without going all out with alot of milling. I actually found a low profile Novak sight in Brownells that fits in the factory dovetail ,probably after a little fitting of course. The Brownells number is 662-017-004AB. I ordered a front sight that will have to be dovetailed in to the slide and I will file it down until we have the sight picture he wants and the gun shoots to the sights. The Yost-Bonitz Retro rear sight would have been perfect but evidently it has been dropped. It had a .140 wide notch. I was just suprised that there are not more options out there like the Yost-Bonitz. Thanks alot for the responses.        greer
