Here's some 30-06 long range loads-

175 grain Berger VLD at 2800 fps has 1000 ft lbs at 800 yards

185 grain VLD at 2700 fps has 1026 ft lbs at 800 yards

210 grain VLD at a mere 2550 fps has 1032 ft lbs at 900 yards

COMPARES TO

150 grain Ballistic Tip at 2950 fps has 742 ft lbs at 800 yards

125 grain TNT at 3300 fps has 423 ft lbs at 800 yards

One of the major problems with using energy figures with effectiveness of a bullet, that the energy of the bullet that is applied to the target is very little on a pointed bullet that does not expand. Our current military ammo is proving this when they are zipping bullets through the enemy and having very little immediate effect unless the CNS or pulmonary systems are hit.

Bergers are quite explosive at longer ranges, they have an awful thin jacket.

Berger lists the intended use of their bullets on their site under products, all of those in the link I listed are expanded big game bullets.  ;)

Clayne_b, what caliber, bullet weight and load is your trajectory and wind chart for? If I am not mistaken it is for a .223 Remington and it appears as if it might for a 100 yard POA/POI. It's for your Handi correct? What length barrel and what twist as well?...Thanks and Merry CHRISTmas....<><....:)

I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that the current military ammo is full metal jacket as required by Geneva Conventions.  Expanding bullets are not allowed in warfare by the signatories.

You are  kinda correct I think it was actually the Hague convention that banned exanding bullets, but what i am talking about is when a bullet gets to a velocitey that is too slow for it to expand it acts like a FMJ.

Clayne_b - I think your thinking on the 10X is correct. JMO but I think there are way too many people that think they have to have a 24X or so to shoot any thing at long range. For paper - yes - in the field - no. Good Shooting and Good Luck

When was it made? If it's a 2007 or 2008, it's likely a 1:9", if earlier it's hard to tell, see the FAQs to determine year of manufacture, below the twist rate list are instructions on how to check the twist rate, they switched back and forth tween 1:12" and 1:9" starting in 2005.

Read the thread down the page Bullets heavier than 60 gr. in 9" twist .223s?, no sense repeating everything that was said there.  ;D

Try some mid-weight SMK or VLD bullets and see how much less your drop and drift is!
