can you unload an Omega without firing it?
« on: December 16, 2008, 02:42:43 AM »
I had some trouble this year with my powder getting moist due unseasonably humid temperatures.  I shoot loose powder since I shoot a .54 cal with #11 caps.  I can't unload it without shooting it so I keep my gun loaded most of the season and just change primers.  This weekend I had a shot that didn't fire up the whole way and missed a doe.  I was in a location that wouldn't allow me to clean my rifle every day if I had unloaded it every day.

This has caused me to consider buying a new gun that I can shoot pellets out of.  Can you unload an Omega by pulling the breach plug and dropping the pellets out and then pushing the sabot and bullet out with a wood dowel without damaging the barrel?  It would have helped this past weekend where I could have switched powder every day.  With the easy of cleaning the Omega I can shoot off the round and clean at home but out in the bush that isn't always easily done.

There is an Omega Z5 starter kit at the local shop for $275 and Thompson Center has a $50 rebate so the total price would be $225 plus tax.  Pretty good deal for what I've seen in the area and on the web.

THanks

Yes you can. But the pellets suck up moisture too.
I find it hard to believe your powder is sucking up that much moisture. I would look into ways to stop the moisture myself.

Are you saying that you have a bullet stuck in the barrel or did the gun fire but you missed the deer? In the future you can put a wad under the bullet and this will help keep the power dry.

I use one of the c02 dischargers.  I shoot loose powder and pulling the breech plug would result in powder all over so the blast of c02 works out well for me.  When you seat a load on pellets does it crush them?  If so pulling the plug may still make a mess with a pellet load.  What rifle do you have that is letting in that much moisture?  may want to look into some ways to reduce the moisture getting into the gun rather than buying a new rifle.  Do you bring the gun into a warm environment, then back out to the cold while its loaded?  If so you are getting condensation in the barrel due to the temp change and you will experience that with any steel barrel.
