Hello all, got a question for you Marlin pro's. In this calibur 32, I see various ammo, 32 Winchester special, 32 S&W, etc. Just exactly which is the proper ammo.Thanks all, later Ray.

It's on gunbroker web site as we speak, 32 Special cal. Back to my question, what type of ammo? Winchester special, S&W, etc. Thansk Ray.

32 Winchester special unless it's been re-chambered or re-barrelled.

32 win. special is a good caliber...You just don't see it much anymore. I believe hornady has some of their new wonder ammo for it and remington still makes it.... It's close to a 30-30 win in performance and ballistics...

I didn't remember Marlin making the 336 in the 32 Win Spl.! To quote Massad Ayoob:
"Over the years, the Marlin 336 has been made in many calibers. As with the Winchester ‘94, the .30-30 has been overwhelmingly the most popular. However, I’ve seen a very few in .32 Special."
Nice rifle, others have told you about the caliber. I especially like the half magazine. I had my 336 done that way!

Thanks for the info, as I was looking I wasn't to sure what exactly they were selling. Looked at the ballistics and it seems like a decent calibur for leveling a deer. Thank you for your imput and advice, you guys seem to come up with the answers! Later Ray.

The 32 winchester special has been around for years. I was selling the ammo back in 60. I have a 32 winchester special in 336 L which is the long barrel mod. I think but not sure that the long barrel was once referred to as the trapper mob. There were at one time a lot of 32 cal. example 32 S And W 32 short colt and 32 long colt but they were all pistol cart. and would not interchange in the same pistol. you also had the 32-20 which is found in both rifle and pistol,one shell for both guns. The 32 winchester special was never very popular as it was almost the same as 30-30 and ammo much easier to find. You hardly ever see a 32 winchester special at the gun shows in fact the one I have was the only one I have seen in 2 years of gun shows and only bought it to go with my marlin collection. MTCW.

What I recall, Winchester came out with the .32 Special as a black powder cartridge in their model 94. That rifle came out in .30-30 which was the first sporting cartridge using smokeless powder. At the time there were many people who trusted black powder more than smokeless, so Winchester came out with the .32 Special to accommodate them.

Winchester came out with the 32 Special as a smokeless powder cartridge that could be reloaded with Black powder. At that time, most smokeless powders were not available to handloaders. The 32 has a 16" twist, as opposed to the 30-30's 12", so it could also use heavier bullets and would be less prone to fouling with black powder. I personally think it was also designed to compete with the 303 Savage, which used heavier bullets as well.

And the 32 Special shots 170 grain cast boolits great! I shoot mine out to 200 meters in lever action silhoute. I have not had a ram (200 meters) not fall over when/if I hit it.

Mine is in a model 93 marlin. 4 digit serial number, 1921-1922 vintage.

The rest of the story, I got my Marlin 336 in the 32 Winchester special a couple of weeks ago, beautiful walnut stocks, nice clean rifle. Been out shooting and find it to be accurate as all heck! I'm wondering were to find a rear peep site, the kind that mounts on the stock, with the elevation adjustment, etc. Thansk alot for your info, later Ray.

This is for the 336, but recheck the numbers to be sure.
Marbles says 009895 for sight, and 995015 for the screw kit.
Marbles is the best because it has both elevation and windage adjustments.
I see guys using them all the time in Levergun Silhouette competition.

There is a lot of peep sights that also mount on the receiver. Some with target knobs, some without.
The advantage of the tang sight is a longer sight plain over the receiver mounted peep sight.

If you have a flip up rear sight the the tang sights can fold down so you can use them.
Plus they look cool!

If you get a flip up rear sight, be careful, there is one design that will wear the bluing away as you flip it up and down. I plan on just putting a blank in the rear dove tail.

I plan on putting a tang sight on my 1948 336SC 30-30 (in brand new condition!) and use it for some Lever action silhouette next year. This year I used my 1921 Marlin 93 in 32 special, but next year my Dad hopes to join me, and the 93 was his deer hunting gun.

I think Marlin made a limited special run of .32 magnums up a few years back? Is this what your refering to?

Marlin marked them on thier rifles as .32 Special (just omitting "Winchester") but it's actually a .32 Win Spl. Very rare and highly sought after by Marlin enthusiasts.

Hey towpro, thanks again for the info on the rear site, finally got time to check with Brownells on Marbles tang sites, boy was I for a surprise! $130 for sites plus screws, ouch. Guess I'll get used to the sites that came with the rifle, seems high priced, but then you get what you pay for! Either that or hope to find one at a gun show, later Ray. Happy holidays to all.

If you find one at a show you'll probably pay more and it may be worn or broken. There is substantial precision machining in those sights and I think they're worth it especially for my old eyes.

Quality metallic sights such as the Marbles, Smith ladder sight, and Verniers don't come cheap. I have used all three for different applications. Most all of the Sharps makers offer Vernier tang sights as a option. $ 600.00 to $ 800.00 is common for some of these sights. R Jones

Jumping in here way late guys but it has been some time since I have been on the GB site. The 32 is a great little woods cal. in the 336. In the nort woods of MN, the 35 rem. cal. in the 336 was also popular. Just for general info, I have seen 2 winchester 38-55's that the barrels shot out on so the owners had them rebarreld to 32 special.
