Considering purchase
« on: January 28, 2009, 05:18:06 AM »
After several years of reading about the FA I really am considering a purchase. It would be the Model 83 for sure as the shorter oal of the model 97 (depending on the bullet selection) may be a hindrance??
I figure that I owe this to myself & need to do it while I still have some piss n vinegar left in my system. I will need to budjet this out for sure as we have a lot of members here on the whole who regret selling a firearm in particular and I think that I would fall into this class. I am not overlooking that new single shot though as it would be very practical for me for the Coyotes.

I have an M83, I very much like that a stronger 5 shot cylinder with extended COL leaves room a heavy bullet and a lot of powder space  ::). This really gives the gun an edge!

Have you ever held a M83? So superior to all other single actions! Open the loading gate half cock it and you know she means business... and real tight so don't count on getting a sheet of papir in anywhere... real masterpiece that one!

Mine is sadly only a .357... but can imagine what one would do with a .454 or a .475  :P

And I'm sure what ever caliber you get, you'll be clippin' coyotes pretty soon.....

I would really like the caliber to be a .45 but I have two of these already (Rugers) so the .475 may be just the ticket. Why not the .454?...I dont have anything against them but agree with the popular notion here that to get more power out of a handgun, you go to a larger diameter and keep the velocity around the same 900 to 1200fps range.

I have a FA .475, a FA83 in .454 with a .45 Colt Cylinder and a .45  Colt FA97.  The .475 and the little FA97 get shot a lot.  Now that I think about it, I've been seriously negligent by ignoring the .454/.45 -- think I'll have to rectify that.

If you already have two .45s, the .475 is a great choice -- one of my all time favorites.   You can load it to whatever comfort/power level you desire.  For the most part, I run mine with 400gr LFNGCs at a chronoed 1,140 fps.  You have to pay more attention with heavier loads to keep the barrel off your hat brim (or forehead as the case may be).

FWIW,

Paul
