Holster for 5.5 inch Bisley
« on: November 04, 2008, 03:44:18 PM »
Any suggestions for field carry for the Ruger Bisley 5.5 inch? Leather or nylon is acceptable and I will not be carrying a lot - just looking for a good solid holster.

I am quite pleased with my Ringler and Rhybka holsters.  Both are leather.  You may also want to look at simplyrugged for their pancake style holsters.

I use a cross draw full flap holster from El Paso Saddlery.
http://www.epsaddlery.com/pc-88-9-2000-full-flap-holster.aspx

It protects my gun from the weather and when going through heavy brush and holds it securely. No twigs or branches can snag the hammer and accidentally cock the piece. And the cross draw gives me full access even if I am driving a tractor or an atv.

I had it made up for my Freedom Arms 83, but have found that it also holds my Ruger Blackhawk and S&W Model of 1988 just as well. A very versatile investment. It is not cheap, however. It lists at $120, but you get what you pay for.

I looked at the El Paso site last night and the crossdraw makes a lot of sense. Thanks.

The Freedom Arms holsters intended for the 6" Mdl. 83's will work well for your Bisley. They can sometimes be found previously owned but nearly brand new at good prices. Tan only, though.

Here is a link to the one that I use for my bisley.  Not overly expensive, but it holds it at a good angle on my hip and doesn't look bad.  Well made for the price too.  If you want I can take a picture of the holster later when I have more time.

No. 5 Patton wins. Thanks to all. I have one of the Ruger holsters for my 7.5 inch Bisley and like it just fine. I ordered the No. 5 Patton from El Paso Saddlery for my 5.5 inch Bisley's. I like the way it carries the gun a bit lower, because I usually have a fanny pack or day pack with a waist belt. The Patton should carry the revolver low enough to not interfere.

I looked at in online and just ordered it too. I ordered the lined version. I particularly like the lower hang of the holster. Not to mention that I have always admired old George. It will be like carrying a piece of history.

Yes, I ordered the lined version also. I received mail from them yesterday and they are 8 weeks out on delivery.

So it will be sometime in January.
In the meantime I have my full flap crossdraw holster they made for me. Probably my first choice as the winter weather sets in for protecting my sidearm. It takes as long as it takes. All things come to he who waits.

Delivery date is not an issue here. I am willing to wait to have what I want. Besides that,
the Bianchi that I ordered for my 4 inch M29 arrived today so I am not undergunned in the carry department.

I looked at Simplyrugged and talked to them in Alaska-almost ordered one, but fell in love with the classic look of the El Paso Patton. My next holster will probably be a simplyrugged for one of my Smiths or for the 7.5 inch Bisley.

While originally boguht for one of my other Ruger SA's  I use it for my Bisley's as well - a Mitch Rosen "Sport".  Finest holster I've ever used.

TommyD,

You really started me rethinking my decision on the holster. I am going to call El Paso today and inquire about the 2000 full flap crossdraw.

I highly reccommend Simply Rugged.
I have recently purchased (2) of their Loaded Pancakes for a Smith 29 Mountain Gun and a J frame 357.
Also purchased (2) Regular Pancakes for a Kimber 1911 5" and a J frame 357 along with belt, clip and ammo carriers.

I really love my full flap holster. I wear it more than any other when out in the field. It is very secure and protects the gun while affording easy access. The cross draw is especially desirable if you drive a tractor or an ATV.

In the winter months, if you wear it under a heavy coat, it is still easy to get to and and protects the coat lining from the hammer spur.

I received the full flap El Paso today from Don. It is a really well made holster. The revolver fits very tight and it will need to be seasoned with the gun in place for a few days to stretch properly. I am very pleased.

I ordered it on November 7 and received the holster December 10. Good service.

My favorite holster for the Blackhawk is the Milt Sparks 200AW.  If I believe correctly, Elmer Kieth had a hand in the design of this one.  I liked it so much I ordered another for my FA83.  The wait is getting to be a little obnoxious, but it gives you plenty of time to save your pennies..(=
