Why the 45-410 ?

I was in the TC CUSTOM SHOP today at FOX RIDGE  and learned that TC as of this week  will not be making the 45-410 barrel in regular production or special order anymore ! The last ones were made this week,that also includes the 12" G-2'S !I think that TC is starting to cut there own throats  WHY?  :cry:

I talked to them and they told me it was do to safety....They said, "a 454 will camber in that barrel" :eek:

    Are they also discontinuing it for the Encore? I mean, they make .454 barrels for that frame. There should be no safety issue with that one.

blued version for Contender,,,,you guys are scaring me into buying it possibly!
Tell me more about owning and shooting one of these. I'm thinking only the 410 shell for the most part,,,but then I think about getting a carbine barrel in 410 or 28 or 20gauge,,,,did they offer these?

Years and years ago I had a .45-410 barrel for a Contender. It was the iron sighted version (no rib). But I never really patterned it or even paid attention to the shells I was putting into it. I just sort of plinked with it informally for about a month or so before trading it for a heavy .22 rf barrel because I thought it was a more serious thing to do.  I've swapped in and out of Contender-based firearms at least three times. Every time, I figured I'd probably get back into T/C products. I really like this company.

Over the years, I've known a number of people who've actually bird hunted over dogs with this barrel in the Contender (quail, not grouse!). It is also a very useful close range varmint rig for unwelcome critters that get into barns and henhouses, I have been told.  This past spring, an older gent told me how much fun he had squirrel hunting with his .45-410 Encore pistol barrel.  I'd been sort of leaning toward getting an Encore for a while, and that pretty much tipped the scales.

 I figured I'd get a .44 magnum barrel first, then maybe a .45-410.   When I finally got it last month, the shop had the .45-410 barrel in stock but not the .44 mag. So that's what I got.  If they're planning to discontinue this in the Encore as well, I'm glad I got it when I did.

 After having my planned range trips either rained out or pre-empted for other reasons over the last three weeks, I should finally get to shoot it this weekend. I don't expect to be disappointed in it.

I have a 10 inch iron sighted 45/410 and use it every year for squirrel and close in rabbit hunting I have even used it for sekkt shooting. it is a very fun barrel to shoot. This is one of the few barrels i will never trade off.

Why, why why!  Another good caliber gone by the wayside with the 357max, 375 Win, 41 mag, 35 rem and others.  Good thing I have all the ones I wanted.  Guess I will just hang onto them.

It is a shame.  The Contender is getting to where all they have as new standard barrels are common boring calibers.  Guess you have to buy used or go custom.

Does anyone know for sure if you can use 454 Casul loads in the Encore 45-410 barrels, I know it is not possible on the Contender barrels.  Since they do chamber Encore barrels for the 454 Casul then it can handle the pressure.  Has anyone tried this?  Is it safe to do?

I asked that question on a different thread some weeks ago. When I learned (via this thread) that they were discontinuing the .45-410 barrels, I had a guilty twinge. I felt as if some lawyer from T/C had read my query and freaked out.  But obviously, I'm not the first or last Encore owner to consider this possibility.

  Given the number of .357 max owners who've complained of Max chambers getting buggered up by using full-power .357 ammo in 'em, my guess is that full house .454 would scorch the dickens out of that extra-long chamber. But otherwise -- unless rim thickness is a major issue -- the Encore frame -- and barrel -- ought to be able to handle the pressure.

 That is, unless, somebody forgot to take the choke out first. I can't imagine that would be a very good outcome even with factory .45 Colt loads. With the .454? Yow!

 My guess is that even if T/C drops these barrels, a custom barrel maker will answer the call. I'd guess they'll become fairly expensive. As for myself, I think I'll just limit mine exclusively to shotshells and put temptation behind me.

If nothing else, that'll encourage me to hurry up and get another barrel.
