308subsonic loads??
« on: September 09, 2008, 05:05:26 PM »
Here is what Ill be using it in. H&R survivor 16.5" barrel with a 8 " suppressor. I dont want to have to use any fillers. Are there any good factory loads out there? could not find much on GB.com.

Ill be hitting the gunshow this weekend for supplies.  any info would be helpful.

What uses are you planning? Sub sonic has to be below 1050 fps to be quiet,it still isn't silent! I wish you luckin finding some ammo for your needs.

Mostly hunting hogs and deer.  The suppressor I have is very effective. I can shoot an Ak 47 all day without  ear plugs . Most all the noise you hear is the bolt slamming shut and a sonic crack down range. I little pop when it warms up.

I have a whole lot of experience with a 308 subsonic but not in a 308 Win rather using a 300 Whisper with a Gemtech can.

To stabilize the heavier bullets at subsonic speeds you will need a fast twist I have 1:8 Lilja barrel but you might get by with a 9 twist with 200 to 220 gr.bullets.

Shot placement on game IS CRITICAL as there is no expansion.
I have read repeatedly about "bullet upset" in tissue but have yet to see it on deer. It usually icepicks through.
Make it a head shot , spine to drop it there  or through the heart and plan to follow with no blood trail.

I have shot the 240 gr. Sierra HPBT through 4 fresh 2x4's and generally find the bullet unscathed except for grooves from the rifling.

Do use the suppressor on a full throttled 308 and 270 to reduce the sound and recoil- when you shoot supersonic through a suppressor you get the crack but difficult to pinpoint the direction of the shot and you can usually forego the earmuffs as the sound is not unpleasant.

Remember, the POI is usually quite a bit lower with a can on- mine usually 12 inches low

Hope it helps some and is not too off topic.

I've the Hornady 170 gr FP (30-30 bullet) over 8.5 gr of Unique in LC cases with no wad or filler.  Runs 1050 fps out of 18.5" barrel with 10" twist.  I've a Sionics and that is a very quiet load.  MOA at 100 yards. Little to expansion in deer but the FN provides a little more shock.  As mentioned, pick your shot and place the bullet perfectly.

Thanks for the info.  I'm going to try a 200 grain bullet 10 grains of trail boss with a magnum primer.

I have hunted deer with a 223 all my life so Im used to proper shot placement . ;D
