25-06 Free bore
« on: December 18, 2008, 03:19:38 PM »
I have a Handi with laminated stock and 26 inch heavy barrel in 25-06.   Accuracy has always been just fair at best.  2-4" groups are pretty standard regardless of load.  Have changed scopes three times. I have always been able to get my other guns to shoot a max. of 1  1/4" at a hundred yards or less but not this one.   Started reloading and found this thing has a lot of free bore.  120 grain bullets only sit in the case about 1/8" and still off of the barrel lands a bit.   Should I send this gun back for repairs or what do the experts on this forum recommend?

Advise is appreciated!

The only "repair" is to replace the barrel.  Most likely any other 25-06 barrel you get from them will be the same.  Larry

Yup, lots of freebore is standard for many H&R chamberings, load to recommended COL and live make do, Weatherbys work fine with lots of freebore, no reason it shouldn't with a good load in the H&R, my 25-06 Ultra shoots 115gr and 117gr factory ammo great, good enough I don't even try to handload for it.  ;)

This looks like the 25-06 Ultr I had.

I spent multy hours trying to make it shoot. Got it down to 1-1/4"
that was it before I traded the barrel.

You got to come up with some measurment before you can say
whats wrong.
