25 ACP breach plug
« on: December 17, 2008, 08:35:52 AM »
I am expanding my collection and ordered an Endeavor framewith trigger job from Eds and a stainless 209x50 Katahdin barrel (not prohunter).I am thinking about getting a 25 ACP breach plug for a 209x50. Should I put off purchasing one and see how it shoots without it? I think it may only be people that are selling these are knocking the 209 primer breach. My other M/L is an older scout 54cal and uses shotgun primers and it works well, the only misfires I have had with it were from my own fault, trying to get a few hunting days out of the charge or forgetting to send a charge down the barrel after storage. So the system may have some merit.Who here has the system and what if any kind of improvement have you noticed?

I have tried the 25 ACP on both Omega and Encore and will give you my opinion.  If you shoot BP, Pyro, or T7, then the 25ACP will ELIMINATE blowback into the action and I think it bought me some accuracy in the Omega, didn't notice anything in the Encore.  If you are going to use any of those propellants, definitely recommend them.  The Omega was doing a pretty solid 1/2 MOA for the original owner and then me on that system; .25acp, 3F T7 81 gr weighed out and Barnes 245 Spitfire bullets.  The Encore was never quite that good, but a consistent 1 MOA with many loads either 209 or .25acp.  Neither rifle worked well with the .25acp and Blackhorn 209 powder due to weak ignition.  I won't use any powder other than BH209 now so tolerate a bit of non-corrosive blowback with regular 209s just to get the benefit of Blackhorn powder.  I sold one of my .25 plugs and am hanging on to the other just in case a new powder comes out that works with it.  My recommendation is to try BH209 with CCI 209 primers first.  I shoot that powder just like my centerfires, have put 30+ rounds down the tube, no swabbing and same POI as the 2cd round on all the rest and left the gun fouled and not cleaned since Oct 29 till now with no issues (shot it once in mid Nov just to confirm after hunting in the freezing rain for 2 days and again last week to kill a doe).

May I give a report of my friends 209x50 Encore Katahdin( 20 inch barrel) barrel at 200 yards; two shots where a 1/2 inch aparts. Van stopped and would not shot the third shot. I watched him do it. We walked the 200 yards to see them. I could not belive it. Van has always been a great shot. It doesn't get any better that that. That why he is always kicking me at the range. That Encore 209x50 Katahdin barrel  is the way to go in black powder,

I've used the 25acp breech plug in my Encore for I think 8 years now.  I used the first one that utilized a cut-down .22 Hornet case and now the 25acp so I don't have to trim the brass. I shot Pyrodex and now 777 both in FF.  I know a lot of folks say that it is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist...well...OK...but I continue to use it for 3 reasons.
1- My action and breech area Stay clean.
2- My groups stay tight(I still have a flyer occasionally, but when I do....It's the ol' man not the rifle).
3- My fumbly old fingers love handling the 25acp casing instead of a primer on a cold, dark morning.
GOOD SHOOTIN', Walt  ;)

I have not used the 25ACP plug but have consider it. I do know on my Encore after each seasons use I need to pull the firing pin assembly and give a good cleaning because of blowback from the 209 primer.
