New to handi rifles, got a question
« on: December 19, 2008, 09:43:31 PM »
I'm new to these boards, i usually do most of my posting over on survivor's sks boards.  I am wondering if on a handi rifle you can change from center fire to slug gun.  I really want to get a handi rifle cause i like the idea of being able to have multiple guns in the same one.

First off welcome to the site.

Yes sir you can, IF you start out with a SB2 reciever. Easy way to start is buy a complete rifle in an SB2 then add your shotgun barrels.

If you thumb thru the FAQ there is a loads and loads of helpful information. If you go with the Handi rifle BOOKMARK THIS SITE. There is not a better bunch of helpful informed guys on the web.
Here is a link to the FAQ

Welcome to GBO ;D I think the 12 gauge Ultra barrel will only fit the 10 gauge shotgun frame. The 12 gauge Ultra slug barrels are very large in diameter. If you get a regular 12 gauge slug barrel or either of the 20 gauge barrels, they will fit rifle frames. If you get a new 357 or 44 mag barrel, they have special SB1 frames and can fit the same slug barrels. The SB1 frame will not fit other rifle barrels however. As you probably already know, you can not fit rifle barrels to a shot gun frame (SB1). There are differences not only in the heat treatment of the frames, but also in the firing pin configurations. It gets a little complicated, but the best bet is to get a SB2 frame to have as many options as you can. Good Luck and Good Shooting.

would this gun accept rifle barrels?

Hillbillyboy the Ultra slug hunter in 12ga  is on 10ga shotgun frame. It will not accept rifle barrels. As the others have said the best way to go is to get a Handi Rifle (SB2) in whatever caliber you prefer and then have the accessory barrels fitted that suit your needs. The only barrels H&R will not fit to the SB2 frame are the 10ga and 12 USH as well as the sportster barrels(which are rimfire and have their own special frame).

ALL H&R single shot model numbers (except combos and rimfires) start with SB, the laminated t-hole stocks come on five different SB2 rifles, as well as an SB1 and SB2 Shotgun, if you look at the H&R website, you'll see all of their offerings except the .444 SS Ultra Hunter.  ;)

I have a question too.  So after reading the FAQ and the 101 a Handi can be fired without the handguard for accuracy testing?

Yes, it eliminates the forend's affect on the barrel, will tell you if you need to work on the forend or not.

But the forearm helps hold the barrel to the frame, so you have  to catch the barrel when you open the action or the barrel falls off without the forearm attached.
