Where to get good patching paper???
« on: April 10, 2005, 07:57:50 PM »
Anyone know of a paper company currently manafacturing 100% cotton rag onion skin in 7-11 lb weight? Eaton, Southworth and Crane used to make onion skin. I don't like the paper Shiloh is selling---it doesn't have a water mark and doesn't act like cotton paper. Buffalo arms sells the real thing, but is a little soft and fragile. I used to use Southworth 100% rag paper---it was great stuff. I have some old stock Southworth 75% cotton that is good. Somebody must still be making a cotton rag onion skin or eraseable bond in about 9 lb paper. I'm looking for fresh ideas?

Southworth 9lb onionskin tested well at our range (Shiloh & Pedersoli 45-70s using tapered 405 grain .446 nose poured, hollow base bullets) however, I believe it will be hard to find. Look for old 500 count boxes coded 409D "Race Race" or 419D "Four Star".

Two good choices currently available would be either Pro-Art or Strathmore tracing papers. Strathmore has two types, and the one to use has a pad cover which is predominantly yellow. The Pro-Art cover has the word "Tracing" across it in large letters.

All rolling done dry, lubed just before chambering with straight water-sol cutting oil.

I use four types of paper depending which swage die I made the bullet with. I like to have a bullet 2- .004 over bore diameter.
I use Bienfang that paper is .0015 thick, a good paper that you can find at Wall-Mart in the Art section.
Roselle Paper co. Item#50123 tracing pad paper is .0025 thick that is very good paper.
700 copal Duo manifold papers made by Southworth from West Springfield Mass is a 9# paper .001 thick. I found this paper at a local Office supply for $ 6.99 for 1000 at a close out.
These three papers work well for wet or dry wrapping. Watch the grain in the paper when you use your pattern when cutting the paper and you wet patch it will stretch more if you cross cut the grain so cut it the same way.
The fourth paper I use is a Vellum paper made by Alvin and it comes in 11”x17” and its .0015 thick but its stiffer then I like and don’t wrap as tight. I use just enough milk maybe 1 teaspoon in a cup of water to hold it on the bullet and still let release when it leaves the muzzle. If you add to much milk it will stay with the bullet.

Hello,again
Pattern paper;used in patterns for making clothes,is fine for patching bullets. That is what I used before I found the onionskin paper.
Different makes have different thickness, and all the ones I saw were thinner then onionkin.

I talked with Southworth Customer Service last week.  The lightest pound paper that they make now is 20#.
While talking with the lady, she said that there were 2 other calls that day inquiring about 9# paper.

Any one ever try Parchment paper that is used for baking . I found some and bought it .Its reall slick but its hard to get water to penetrate it so i tried putting it on dry.It seems to work ok that way if you wrap it tight  to the bullet. I havent tried shooting any yet .Arnie

... Go to a Michaels Craft Store and in their Art Section,  you'll find - Koh-I-Noor Archival Quality Vellum paper.  It is a 100% cotton - 16# paper.
I just finished wrapping some different weight 0.440 taper and straight bullets with it.  Two wraps produces a 0.450 PP bullet.  It wets well, is great paper to work with and ... now, to see how they shoot.
