Contender frame / barrel info... Help!!
« on: December 27, 2008, 02:51:30 PM »
Hey all,
I used to be "in the know" on TC stuff... years & years ago when all they offered was one frame and a handful of barrels. I've just gotten back into the handgun thing after life got too busy, I'd like to upgrade my frame from the original style to something that'll handle the newer (hotter) caliber barrels to include one of the muzzle loader offerings. Can I do this with a frame that will still work with my original style barrels or do I need to replace the entire system? What's the differences & advantages to the G2 or Encore style frames - are they compatible with my barrels?
Thanks in advance for any info!!

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Depends on how hot you want to go.  Larry has the right idea giving you the link to TC.  There are charts there that will tell you what works with G2, and what works with Encore.  One of your questions was about interchangability.  Encore is not compatable with Contender or G2.  With few exceptions G2 and Contenders will interchange.  One of the exceptions is the g2 muzzleloader barrel will not work on a Contender frame.  A couple of Bullberry's aftermarket barrels won't either.

So, start with the TC site and see what they offer.  If you still have questions we will be here.  And welcome back.

Most of the time, Contender and G2 barrels will interchange, even if you have to polish the locking lugs on the barrel (see another post about this).

The pistol grip will not interchange with an original Contender and a G2.

The forearms from an original Contender may have to be altered slightly to make them work on a G2.  The screw holes will usually line up fine, but the "ears" that cover the hinge pin will need to be shortened so that the won't rub against the reinforcing straps on the G2.  The factory forearms for the G2 have a cutout in those ears that allow the forearm to miss the reinforced area of the frame.

The Encore is basically a completely different firearm that just looks like a G2.  It's bigger, designed for larger calibers.  Nothing from the Encore will interchange with the old Contenders and G2's.  You can get chamberings for the Encore that are the same as the Contender, but they are mostly from custom barrel manufacturers.

Whether you choose a Contender (G2 or Original) or an Encore depends on what calibers you ultimately want.  I prefer the Contender as a handgun and the Encore as a rifle.

Guys,
thanks for the link & great responses... this is a great forum! I checked out the TC website, caliber charts, and still didn't find what I was looking for... The G2 frame would be plenty of gun with their available calibers - but I didn't see / couldn't locate a pistol version muzzle-loader barrel like the .50x209. Am I imagining that I thought this was an option, at least at one time? Anyone have something like this - how's it perform? Help... again!
thanks,
Rando

Don't remember anybody making a 50 cal pistol ML barrel for the Contenders.   Gonic Arms, now out of business, did make 45 cal ML pistol barrels for the Contenders though.

Bullberry makes a muzzle loader barrel for the G2 and Contender, both pistol and rifle.  www.bullberry.com

Again guys... Many thanks!! I'm going to check out Bullberry. I assume they sell a matching fore-stock to accomodate the ramrod?
Any one shoot one of these / impressions?
