Which ones do I keep?
« on: December 26, 2008, 08:56:53 AM »
I have 3 handi barrels in 22 cal. ,22 Hornet, 223 24" bull, and 22-250.  Given the choice to eliminate one, which would you get rid of, and which would you keep.  They all shoot good, I just don't see a reason to keep all 3.

Of the three I'd probably drop the .22-250. I would be more inclined to shot the other two.  They are both cheaper to load for and around here you really don't get a chance at longer shots. 8)

Simply from a, what, can do what, stand point, get rid of the 223. BUT, the 22-250 is usually beyond what most shooters need for a long range caliber. Even when more extream ranges is needed a larger caliber can do this better.

On the other hand one could make a strong argument for the loosing of the Hornet as the 223 can easily do what it does as long as your a handloader.

SO, bases on what I WOULD need and your criteria of having to loose one. I would get rid of the 22-250.

I am SO GLAD I done need to justify owning numerous fairarms as if I was forced to only own what I needed, Id be stuck with a 22RF a 30-06 and a 12ga.

But this is a highly personalized thing.

CW,
your response has some of the pros and cons I have been kicking around.  I am also one who usually lives by the "Get em all" strategy, but I have several other firearm projects that I am trying to finance at the moment.

Here are some other thoughts i've had:

We are not really sure if the Hornet is being made anymore, so I may not be able to easily replace it at a later date.

The 223 will probably always be available in one form or another, though maybe not always in a 24".

The 22-250 can do anything the 223 can do and do it better.

I have a 25-06 that can easily handle the ranges of the 22-250.

Decisions, decisions.

I did not know about the 25-06.
If you are a handloader then thats all the stronger reason to ditch the 22-250 as the 25-06 will easilly cover any long range varmint duties you may have.

The .223 is cheaper to shoot...lot of cheap ammo available, but that is what it is, cheap, not necessarily good.  Quality .223 ammunition is not much less than the .22-250.  The .22-250 will do all the .223 does but longer, harder, flatter, faster.  I'd keep it.

KEEP ALL 3     they each have a place and you already have them     22 hornet is a great walking gun, 223 is a good all around gun and the 22-250 gets the long shots      you are covered for ground pigs

If it was me I would go 22-250 first and then the 22 Hornet. The 223 will cover both. The 223 covers the 22 Hornet like a blanket (except noise) and the 22-250 to within 75-100 yards. If you do a lot of long distance shooting then keep the 22-250 (but you do have a 25-06 for that).

I sure would not like to make that decision. Once I get my mitts on a gun, I do not like to let go of it. Good Shooting and Good Luck

i agree with the jewelry thing!!!!!!
if i had a choice, my definate keeper would be the hornet.
if y'all lived where i do, and hunted the way i do... you would agree also.....
not fast, not far, not powerful... but dam accurate.
i guess its just the luv i have for the hornet, been shoot'n um since 1959
and back then they where a antique caliber.
shot placement is what counts. it will do anything you think a good shot can do.
if any doubts, don't pull it.

Since you have the 25-06, I would go with losing the 22-250 first.  But I really wouldn't want to get rid of any of them.  Remember, your kids need guns too.  At least thats what I tell my wife, she's bought it so far. ;D  I wonder why she rolls her eyes at me when I say it? ??? ::)  DP

after further consideration    i believe a trial separation would be the way to go     you should let the 22-250 go for a trial period     and i just happen to have space in the safe to store that 22-250 for you for an indefinite period      ;) ;) ;)

We are not really sure if the Hornet is being made anymore, so I may not be able to easily replace it at a later date.

Not a problem, Remington apparently intends on keeping the 22 Hornet, maybe not the Superlight tho, dunno about it for sure yet, but the standard contour is still on the production schedule, the next run of barrels is scheduled for April with a 1:9" twist, since they're already making .224" barrels for the .223, the switch to 1:9" keeps it in the lineup. ;D

Hunting rules in your state could play a part in the decision.  Many states do not allow big game hunting with a 22 cal anything, so the 25-06 may win on legal grounds as a keeper.  Larry

It could come down to which one is the least accurate if it were my decision.

I would lean toward maybe letting the 22-250 go, and get something in a larger caliber to replace it.

Or you can do what you are doing here, and let us decide! ;D

I say thumbs down to the 22-250
