remington 405 load 4570 question?
« on: December 24, 2008, 11:32:16 AM »
I loaded some Remington 405 jacketed Sp for my buffalo classic and when I am down to the cannalure the round is 2.65"AOL .My Lyman book says it is to be 2.55. This is normal length Rem brass. If I make them 2.55 the cannalure is .5 in the case. This is a misprint right? the bullits are 1.00 long and i am using50 grains varget.do other people crimp the loads for there single shot H&Rs someone told me I would get better accuracy without a crimp on my 4570 loads.I know I have to crimp the loads for my marlin 4570 so the bullits wont seat deeper from recoil in the magazine tube but is it required in the buffalo classic? Thanks for any input :)

It isn't required in the Buff Classic, unless it improves the performance of the load. See how it shoots first.

Will the 2.65" round chamber in your rifle?

If you look at factory Rem 405gr ammo, it's not crimped in the cannelure, it's crimped on the ogive and has dimple crimps. Don't be confused by the box, I had a box of 270 ammo on the bench when I was takin pics and grabbed the wrong box for the pic!! :-[

Thanks that clears that up. I shot 20 of them at 2.65 and they worked ok but the length was bothering me and I plan on loading more tonight.I will load them to 2.55 without a crimp. :)

I load mine to 2.64 and they chamber just fine. Would setting the bullet to 2.55 compress the powder?

I load them to 2.65 and don't crimp.  But I have throated my BC to take a longer COL round due to my love of massive chunks of lead.  (405 is about the lightest I load at this point). This is a pretty accurate round for me and high on my plinking list as the bulk bullets are fairly cheap (I bought 500 early on).  Will say the Saeco 21A-GC from Western Bullet has turned out to be my most accurate light recoil round in the BC.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
