30-30-win.to 30-30 ackley improved
« on: December 07, 2008, 09:40:12 AM »
Hi does anyone have a chambering reamer in 30-30 Ackley Improved ? I have a 30-30 Texas Contender Arms 22 inch Contender carbine barrel and would like to find someone that would be willing to rechamber my barrel .

                                         Thanks

Why would you want to rechamber a collectors item? The Texas Contenders barrels are no longer made and no more will ever be avaiable. If you want a 30-30 improved give Eds Contenders a call and see if you can trade your barrel for one from him(if he has one) of for another 30-30 barrel to convert. Much better idea than converting such a valuable object as a Texas Contenders barrel, at least in my humble opinion.

I do not think that you can properly convert a contender or encore barrel to AI because you can not set the barrel back. You would end up with something other than a true AI.

Hey scratcherky, this is true on rimless cartridges but on the rimmed 30-30 it can be done correctly.
The AI version of the 30-30 blows the shoulder forward and shortens the neck. This greatly increases case capacity over the standard case.

GOOD SHOOTING!

Thanks for the correction. All my experiences have been with rimless cartridges. Glad to know this regarding rimmed ones.

many thanks to all that replied, I didn't realize the barrel I have is a true collectors item ,especially so since I didn't pay very much for it . I think I'll take your advice though and look for either another barrel to rechamber or a barrel already chambered for 30-30 ackley. next question is does anyone have a phone # or E-mail address for Ed's Contenders ?

If you go to the TC Handguns forum there is always a banner ad for Eds at the top of the page.  It has phone numbers and hours he is available.

I have not found anything other than this thread to suggest that a Texas Contender barrel is or ever will be any kind of collector barrel. In fact at times it has been suggested that they were of mixed quality. Re-chamber it.......its inexpensive and a good imporvement.

I have a 6mm 30-30 AI reamer that I could change the pilot to 30 cal.   Don't know about the collector value of that barrel.  If you want me to do it - you can't be in a hurry as I just dabble in this stuff.
