30-40- Krag???????

Saw a N.E/H&R rifle today in 30-40 Krag. What is the scoop on this gun? Straight grip, rudimentary sights, looked like an older rifle. Can I get different barrels for this gun? I could get it for a song and really want to know if there are any complications to adding bbls. Is this worth getting? Was the 30-40 a standard chambering? Anything about this gun I really would like to know from you experts. Thanks for all thee info and have a happy holiday !

Not likely a factory offering, no one has ever mentioned one that I recollect, probably a rechamber, depends on when it was made for accessory barrels, anything made before 1987 isn't eligible, check the serial number prefix on the frame and see the FAQs for build year info.

I know H&R chambered a military rifle in 30-40 Krag but the only single shot I've heard of were all rechambers.Perfect canidate for a rechamber though. If you would when you go back to check it out let us know what the SN letters are also look on the bbl to see if the cal rating has been modified or X'ed out and restamped . Might look something like 30-30 but the 2nd 3has been changed to a 4 also what is the bbl length.Is the frame case colored Just curious.  Kurt

My 30-40 Krag that I bought from Wally is a rechambered 30-30. The orginal caliber stamp has been cut out and restamped. It looks almost like a factory job....Shoots real good too....

Kenbev,

Accuracy is a question I have with the rechamber to .30-40.  Since it shoots a longer bullet than the .30-30 does it stabilize alright?  I believe the original Krag-Jorgensen had a 1:10 rate of twist same as the Handi/H&R .30 caliber barrels, so I would imagine it would shoot well.

I'm sure not understanding all this talk about rechambers. The 30-40 Krag is a perfectly wonderful cartridge.
If you can get it for a song, do so, and use-as-is.

The discussion is about having a NEF HandiRifle in .30-30 rechambered to shoot the .30-40 Krag round.  This has been done in the past and makes a rifle which is more potent than the .30-30 without the expense of getting a .308 or .30-06 barrel for the NEF.

I have a 30-40 Handi that was rechambered from a 30-30 barrel. It was gifted to me by a fine member here and it is VERY accurate, although it does have a bit of a problem with the chamber. I say get that 30-40 if there are no problems with it. That is a GREAT caliber in a Handi....<><....:)

  It was also a common practice years ago when they were more available to pull the 190 grain .30-40 bullet and reload it in a .30-30. It is said to be VERY accurate.

Not standard.
I had a .30-30 rechambered to .30-40.  Liked it but, got tired of it.  Next .30-30, I rechambered to improved.  I finally have a .30-30 barrel I plan to keep.  The standard twist on .30 caliber barrels is 1 in 10.  Should work for all 30 calibers.  Just make sure it's a SB-2 receiver.  If in doubt, get the serial number and call H&R/NEF.  The .30-40 is a great old caliber.  It has been used on every thing that walks this earth.  If it isn't an SB 2 receiver, I wouldn't touch it.
